To repost on X, tap the Repost icon under the post and choose Repost from the pop-up: it's shared with all your followers. To add your own comment first, choose Repost as Quote instead. To undo it, tap the highlighted Repost icon again and pick Undo Repost.
A Twitter retweet is now called a Repost, and the Quote option replaced the old quote tweet. Here are the steps from X's own help pages, plus the rules on who can see your reposts, why some posts won't repost at all and how to stop seeing other people's.
Repost vs Quote: which one to use
| Repost | Quote | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Shares the post unchanged | Shares it with your own comment on top |
| Can you add media? | No | Yes: one GIF, up to four photos or a video |
| Who sees it | All your followers | All your followers |
| Original author in replies? | Not applicable | Not added automatically: mention them if you want them in |
| How to remove it | Undo Repost | Delete the Quote post |
X's help page also points out you can repost your own posts. It suggests this for an older post that's relevant again, or for one of your replies you want all your followers to see.
How to repost on X
- Find the post you want to share.
- Tap the Repost icon.
- From the pop-up, tap Repost.
The post is now shared with all your followers. In their timeline it looks like the original, with the author's name and username, plus a Repost icon and a line showing you reposted it.
How to quote a post on X
- Go to the post you'd like to share.
- Tap the Repost icon.
- Tap Repost as Quote.
- Add your comment. You can also add one GIF, up to four photos or a video.
- Tap Repost.
If you're sharing an article you haven't opened on X recently, you may see a prompt asking whether you want to read it first. X says you can still repost or quote it without opening it; the prompt is there to cut down on uninformed sharing.
How to undo a repost
- Find the post you reposted. The Repost icon will be highlighted.
- Tap the Repost icon.
- Tap Undo Repost to confirm.
It disappears from your profile and other timelines, though X warns it may still show on devices displaying cached timelines or where it was cross-posted to other sites. Undoing a repost never deletes the original post.
How to delete a Quote post
- Tap your profile icon in the top menu.
- Find the Quote post.
- Tap the icon at the top of the post.
- Tap Delete Post, then Delete to confirm.
Why you can't repost some posts
- The account is protected. A lock icon next to the name means its posts are protected, and nobody can repost them, even followers who can see them.
- The original was deleted or removed. If the author deleted it, or their account was deleted or suspended, your repost disappears too.
If your own posts are protected, you can still repost and quote other people, but only followers you've approved will see what you share. My guide to making your Twitter account private covers that trade-off.
Where reposts show up
X's FAQ explains the timeline side. You see reposts and quotes from people you follow in your Home timeline. If a post from someone you don't follow appears there, look for the Reposted by line: the person who reposted it should be someone you follow. Reposts also sit on the reposter's profile, which is why a repost works as a quiet endorsement. If you've blocked an account, its reposts and quotes won't show up for you, just like its ordinary posts.
Seeing who reposted you
Your Notifications tab shows which posts were reposted and by whom. On the post itself, X shows the number of reposts and quotes, with a Reposts tab and a Quote posts tab listing the accounts. One limit: X will only show up to the most recent 100 people who reposted any public post, even though there's no cap on how many times it can be reposted.
How to stop seeing someone's reposts
If an account you follow reposts things you'd rather not see, go to their profile, tap the gear icon on iOS or the overflow icon on web and Android, and select Turn off Reposts. Two things to know: it isn't retroactive, so reposts already in your timeline stay, and there's no setting to turn off all reposts from every account at once.
Reddit calls it a crosspost, covered in our Reddit crossposting guide.

Limits and good habits
- Reposts count towards X's limit of 1,000 posts per day.
- Typing "RT" at the start of a post isn't an official X feature; it just signals you're quoting someone.
- Reposts from accounts you've blocked won't appear in your timeline.
- Quote when you can add something useful: your view, a tip, context for your audience. A bare repost is fine for news you simply want to pass on.
Each platform handles this differently, so if you post in several places, my walk-throughs on reposting on Instagram and reposting on LinkedIn cover the other two.
My verdict
Reposting on X is one tap, but the Quote option is where the value is for a business: it puts your take in front of your followers and shows you're paying attention. Use plain reposts sparingly, quote when you've something to add, and remember protected accounts can't be reposted by anyone.
Instagram has its own repost feature, and our guide to seeing reposts on Instagram shows where to find yours.
Frequently asked questions
How do you repost on X?
Tap the Repost icon under the post and choose Repost from the pop-up. The post is shared with all your followers.
What's the difference between a repost and a quote on X?
A repost shares the post unchanged. A quote, chosen with Repost as Quote, lets you add your own comment and media before sharing.
How do I undo a repost on X?
Tap the highlighted Repost icon on the post and choose Undo Repost. It's removed from your profile, but the original post isn't deleted.
Why can't I repost a post on X?
If the account has a lock icon, its posts are protected and nobody can repost them. Reposts also disappear if the original post is deleted or the author's account is suspended.
Can I see everyone who reposted my post?
X shows the Reposts and Quote posts tabs on your post, but it only lists up to the most recent 100 people who reposted a public post.
