To deactivate Messenger, you first have to deactivate your Facebook account. Then open Messenger, tap Menu, Settings, Accounts Center, Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion, and follow the steps to deactivate. Meta says it can only be done on a mobile device.
That order is the part that trips everyone up. If you open Messenger and can't find a deactivate option, it's because your Facebook account is still active. Here's the full process from Messenger Help, read in October 2026.
Why you can't deactivate Messenger on its own
Messenger Help says it plainly: you have to deactivate your Facebook account in order to see the option to deactivate your Messenger account. When you deactivate Facebook only, Messenger keeps working, which is why your friends can still message you. My guide on deactivating vs deleting your Facebook profile explains what each does to your account.
How to deactivate Messenger, step by step
First, deactivate Facebook. Then, on your phone:
- Open the Messenger app.
- Tap Menu, then tap Settings.
- Tap Accounts Center.
- Tap Personal details.
- Tap Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Tap Continue to Facebook account deactivation and deletion.
- Tap Continue to account deactivation.
- Enter your password and tap Continue.
If those menus don't match your app
Meta is gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so you may see Accounts Center or Meta Account settings. Messenger Help gives a second route:
- From Chats, tap your profile picture in the corner.
- Scroll down and tap Account settings.
- Tap Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation and deletion.
- Tap Continue to Facebook account deactivation and deletion.
- Tap Continue to account deactivation.
- Enter your password and tap Continue.
Deactivate, delete or just log out?
| Option | What it does | Coming back |
|---|---|---|
| Deactivate Facebook only | Hides your Facebook profile, Messenger keeps working | Log back in to Facebook |
| Deactivate Facebook and Messenger | Takes you off both | Log in to Messenger with your username and password |
| Log out of Messenger | Signs you out on that device only | Log in again on that device |
| Delete your account | Permanent removal | Not a pause button |
If you only want a break from messages on one phone, logging out of Messenger is far less drastic.
How to reactivate Messenger
Messenger Help says you reactivate Messenger by logging in with your username and password. That's it. Here's the full guide to reactivating Messenger if anything goes wrong.
Can you use Messenger without Facebook?
Yes, in a sense. If you deactivate Facebook and keep Messenger, Meta calls that a Deactivated Except Messenger Account, and you carry on chatting while your Facebook profile is hidden. That's the setup a lot of people want when they say they want to quit Facebook but not lose their contacts. I've covered the options in can you use Messenger without Facebook.
How to deactivate Facebook first
Facebook's own steps depend on what you see at the bottom of Accounts Center. If you see Accounts:
- Click your profile picture, then Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Click Accounts Center.
- Click Personal details, then Account ownership and control.
- Click Deactivation or deletion and choose the account or profile.
- Select Deactivate account, click Continue and follow the instructions.
If you see Manage accounts instead, click Manage accounts, then Manage next to the profile, then Deactivation or deletion. One catch: if you have extra Facebook profiles, deactivating your account deactivates all of them.
What people see while you're deactivated
| Facebook off, Messenger still on | Facebook and Messenger both off |
|---|---|
| No one can see your Facebook profile | No one can see your Facebook profile |
| You can still chat on Messenger | You can't use Messenger until you log back in |
| Your profile picture still shows in your Messenger chats | Messages you already sent may still be visible to the people you sent them to |
| People can search for you on Messenger to message you | Your friends may still see your name in their friends list |
Facebook adds two details worth knowing. Using Messenger won't reactivate your Facebook account. And Pages that only you control are deactivated with your account, so hand someone else full control first if the Page needs to stay live.
Before you deactivate: a quick checklist
- Tell close contacts how else to reach you, because they won't be able to message you on Messenger.
- Make sure you know your password. You'll need it to deactivate and to come back.
- Download anything you want to keep from your chats first.
- Remember that deactivating is reversible, so you don't need to delete anything to take a break.
Why you might not see the option at all
Three reasons come up again and again. Your Facebook account isn't deactivated yet. You're on a computer, and Messenger Help says this action can only be done on a mobile device. Or your app's menus have moved to the newer Accounts Center layout, in which case use the second route above.
If you're thinking about deleting instead
Deleting is a different decision. Facebook says you can't regain access once a profile is deleted, though it delays deletion a few days after you ask, and logging back in during that time cancels the request. Messages you sent are stored outside your profile, so friends may still have them afterwards. If you use Facebook to log in to Meta Quest, deleting your profile also deletes your Quest information, including app purchases and achievements.

My advice
Decide what you're trying to escape. If it's the Facebook feed, deactivate Facebook and keep Messenger. If it's messages too, deactivate both, on your phone, in that order. And write your password down before you start.
