X Money Explained: Who Can Use It, the X Card and the Fees

X Money is X's financial app, built into the Money tab on X. It gives you an account with a Visa debit card (the X Card), free instant payments to other X users, interest on your balance, cashback and early direct deposit. Right now it's only for US residents aged 18 or over with a verified US phone number, and X says it's rolling out gradually.

X is careful about one point in its own FAQ, so I'll be too: X Payments LLC is not a bank. Deposits are held at Cross River Bank, which is an FDIC member. Here's what that means, what it costs and what the catches are, all from X's own help page as of October 2026.

Who can sign up for X Money

X lists five requirements. You must:

  1. Be at least 18 years old.
  2. Be a US resident.
  3. Have a verified US phone number.
  4. Have an X account in good standing.
  5. Accept the account opening documents.

If you're outside the US, you can't open one yet. If you already have an account, you can use it while travelling abroad, and the X Card works at ATMs anywhere Visa is accepted. X also asks for your name, date of birth, Social Security Number and address to verify your identity, and may ask for a photo of your ID and a selfie if the details don't match public records.

What X Money includes

  • Instant payments on X: send, receive or request funds from other X users, with no fees or limits once your identity is verified.
  • The X Card: a virtual Visa debit card straight away, plus a physical card you can order. The physical card doesn't print the card number, expiry date or CVV; those live in the Money tab.
  • Early direct deposit: paychecks can land up to two days early.
  • Interest: paid monthly on eligible balances, except for New York residents.
  • Cashback: on eligible purchases with the X Card.
  • Digital wallets: add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay.

How benefits change with your X subscription

This is the part most people don't spot. X Money is free to open, but the best rates are tied to a paid X plan. X's own comparison, as of October 2026:

BenefitFree or BasicPlus or legacy PremiumPremium, Super, Ultra or legacy Premium+
APY4.00%, or 6.00% with qualifying direct deposit4.00%, or 6.00% with qualifying direct deposit6.00%

ATM operator fees reimbursedUp to $4 per transaction, 2 a monthUnlimitedUnlimited
Outbound domestic wire$202 free a year, then $20Free
Metal card$25FreeFree

The boosted rate on the free tier needs qualifying deposits of $1,000 or more within a trailing 34-day period. X counts payroll direct deposits and X creator payouts from Original Content Rewards, Creator Revenue Sharing or Creator Subscriptions.

The fees X lists

What you doX's fee

Instant withdrawal1.75%, minimum $0.25
Mail a checkFree
Replacement metal card$35 (one free replacement on paid plans)
Foreign transactions on debit card purchasesNo extra X fee; currency conversion applies

X adds that you should always check the app for the latest fees, so treat this as a guide rather than a contract.

Is X Money safe?

Funds are eligible for FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. X also runs a sweep programme that spreads balances across partner banks for coverage up to $10 million per ownership category; you can opt out, in which case your funds stay at Cross River Bank with the standard limit.

A passkey is required to sign in, using Face ID, a fingerprint or your device PIN, and it needs iOS 18 or Android 9 or later. Card purchases fall under Visa's Zero Liability Policy when unauthorised transactions are reported promptly. Disputes must be raised within 60 days of the statement date, and most are resolved in 30 to 45 days.

What happens if your X account is suspended

This is the question I'd want answered before moving a paycheck. X says that if your account is suspended for violating its Child Safety, Violent and Hateful Entities or X Money Acceptable Use policies, you lose access and your funds are mailed to you by check. A suspension for any other policy doesn't interrupt X Money. Your X Money account is also tied to one X account and can't be moved to another.

Because it involves your account details, it makes sense to lock the account down first, and my guide to two-factor authentication on X shows how.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

How to add funds

  • ACH transfer from a linked bank (1 to 3 business days)
  • Wire transfer (same day before 3 PM ET on business days)
  • Debit card load or cash load at participating retailers (instant)
  • Mobile check deposit (1 to 7 business days)
  • A transfer from another user on X (instant)

Bank accounts can only be linked through Plaid. If you're comparing payment apps, my PayPal vs Venmo comparison is a useful benchmark for what peer-to-peer apps usually charge.

Tax and statements

Monthly statements arrive on the first of each month. If you earn $10 or more in interest in a calendar year, X issues a Form 1099-INT, usually available by January 31 in Settings under Statements and Tax Forms. New York residents don't earn interest; X offers them a $300 bonus instead for $3,000 of qualifying deposits within 90 days.

Creators can also be supported directly through a subscription, which my guide to X Subscriptions explains.

My verdict

X Money is a polished US current account bolted onto a social network, and for creators already paid by X, routing payouts into it earns the boosted rate without a paycheck. The trade-off is concentration: your banking sits behind your X login and X's policies. If you use it, keep a second account elsewhere and read the suspension rules first.
