To see comments on X (formerly Twitter), open the post and scroll down below it. Replies appear directly under the original post, newest or most relevant first depending on your sort setting. Tap any reply to see its own thread of responses. There is no separate comments page, everything sits under the post itself.

What counts as a comment on X

On X, what most people call a comment is a reply. There is no comment box separate from the post itself. When someone responds to a post, that reply sits underneath it, and anyone can scroll down to read it.

This is different from platforms like Facebook or YouTube, where comments live in a distinct section. On X, replies are part of the same feed as the original post. Once you understand that, finding them is straightforward.

How to see comments on a post

If you want to read the replies to a specific post, here is what to do.

  1. Open X and find the post you want to check, either in your timeline or by searching for it.
  2. Tap or click on the post to open it fully.
  3. Scroll down below the post text and engagement numbers.
  4. You will see replies listed underneath, starting with the most relevant or recent ones.

That is it. There is no extra menu or hidden tab. Replies are always attached to the post they belong to.

Changing how replies are sorted

X lets you choose how replies are ordered when you open a post. Near the top of the reply section, there is usually an option to switch between views, such as top replies or newest replies.

Top replies tend to show responses from accounts with more engagement or relevance, based on X's own ranking. Newest replies simply show them in chronological order, which can be more useful if you want to see the conversation as it unfolded.

I would suggest switching to newest if you are trying to follow a live conversation, such as during a breaking news event or a Q&A session.

Viewing replies to your own posts

If you have posted something yourself, checking the comments works the same way. Go to your profile, find the post, and open it. Replies will be listed underneath exactly as they would on anyone else's post.

You can also get notifications when someone replies to you, depending on your notification settings. This is the quickest way to spot new replies without manually checking every post you have shared.

Seeing replies within a thread

Sometimes a reply has its own replies underneath it, creating a smaller thread within the main conversation. To see these, tap directly on the reply you are interested in. This opens it as its own post, with any further responses shown below.

This nested structure can make long conversations a bit harder to follow, especially on popular posts with thousands of replies. Taking it one reply at a time, rather than trying to read everything at once, makes it more manageable.

Finding replies on mobile versus desktop

The process is largely the same whether you are using the X app on your phone or the website on a desktop browser. You open the post, then scroll down to see replies underneath.

On mobile, you might need to tap the post once to expand it before replies appear. On desktop, clicking the post usually opens a dedicated view with the replies already visible on the right-hand side or underneath, depending on your screen layout.

If replies are not showing straight away, try refreshing the page or closing and reopening the app. Sometimes it is simply a loading delay rather than a setting problem.

What to do if you cannot see any comments

If a post shows no replies at all, there could be a few reasons. The account may have limited who can reply, which is a setting post authors can choose when they publish. In that case, only certain people, such as those they follow or mention, are allowed to respond.

It is also possible that no one has replied yet, particularly on newer or smaller accounts. If you are sure replies exist but cannot see them, try logging out and back in, or checking from a different device to rule out a technical glitch on your end.

I cannot tell you how to bypass reply restrictions set by the post's author. If someone has limited replies, you will only see the comments from people who meet those limits, and there is no way around that as a viewer.

Searching for comments from a specific person

If you are trying to find whether someone in particular has commented on a post, scrolling through hundreds of replies is not practical. Instead, use the search bar and type the post author's handle along with relevant keywords from the topic.

This will not guarantee you find the exact reply, but it narrows things down. X's search function looks across the platform, not just within one thread, so results may include other posts too.

Another option is to check the specific account's own profile and look through their recent activity, though this only works if their replies are public and not restricted.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not see any comments on a post?

The author may have restricted who can reply, so only certain accounts show up. It is also possible nobody has replied yet. There is no way to bypass restrictions set by the post's author.

Are comments and replies the same thing on X?

Yes. X does not have a separate comment section like some other platforms. What people call comments are replies, and they appear directly underneath the original post when you open it.

Can I sort comments by newest first?

Yes. When you open a post, there is usually an option near the replies to switch between top replies and newest replies. Choosing newest shows the conversation in chronological order.

Does the process differ between the app and the website?

Not really. On both, you open the post and scroll down to see replies underneath. On mobile you may need to tap the post first, while desktop often shows replies as soon as the post opens.
