How to Check Your Google Rankings for Any Keyword

To check your Google rankings for free, open the Performance report in Google Search Console, switch on Average position and look at the Queries tab: it shows the average position of your top result for every search that showed your site. A manual Google search is the least reliable check, because results change with the searcher's location, device and history.

Most people start by typing their keyword into Google and scrolling. It feels like the real thing, but it isn't. Google's own help page says you might not see your site for a query that appears in your report, because results are specific to the time, place, device and recent history of the person searching. Your view is one person's view.

Method 1: Search Console (free, your own site)

  1. Open Google Search Console and choose your property.
  2. Open Performance, then Search results.
  3. Click the Average position box above the chart so it's switched on, along with Clicks and Impressions.
  4. Open the Queries tab to see the position for each search term.
  5. Click a query, then the Pages tab, to see which URL ranks for it.
  6. Set the date range to the last 28 days for a current view, or compare two periods to see movement.

Read the numbers the way Google defines them. In the chart, average position is the average of your topmost result across the whole site. In the table, it's the average for that specific query or page. An average of 8.4 might mean you were 5th for some searchers and 12th for others.

Method 2: a manual search, done carefully

If you want to see the results page with your own eyes, reduce the bias:

  • Use a private or incognito window so your browsing history has less effect.
  • Remember your location still shapes the results, especially for anything local.
  • Check on mobile and desktop, since the layouts and positions differ.
  • Count carefully: ads, maps, AI Overviews and video blocks push organic results down the page.

Treat it as a sanity check, not a measurement. It's useful for seeing what you're up against on the page, and that's about it.

Method 3: a rank tracker (many keywords, any location)

A rank tracker checks the same keywords on a schedule, from a set location and device, so you get a clean line over time instead of averaged data. It's the right tool when you're tracking a list of target keywords, monitoring several locations, or checking competitors' positions as well as your own.

Trackers such as Wincher, SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Mangools' SERPWatcher and the tracking tools in Semrush and Ahrefs all do this, with different update frequencies and location options. I've compared them in the best rank tracking tools for small businesses, and if you just want to start without paying, there's a shortlist of free rank tracker tools.

Why your rankings look different from your clicks

Position isn't the whole story. Two pages at the same position can get very different clicks depending on what sits above them. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the overall Search Console data, so a search where an AI Overview answers the question can show impressions at a decent position with few clicks. If a page ranks well but CTR is low, look at the results page itself before you rewrite anything.

Checking rankings for a page, not a keyword

Sometimes the better question is 'what does this page rank for?' In Search Console, open the Pages tab, click the URL, then switch back to Queries. You'll get every search that page appeared for, with its average position for each. This is how you spot a page ranking for something you never targeted, which is often your next article idea, or two of your pages taking turns for the same search, which usually means one of them needs to be merged or refocused.

Export that list to a sheet once a month. Sorting it by impressions rather than clicks shows you where the demand is, not just where you're already winning.

What to do with the numbers

  • Positions 8 to 20 with good impressions are your best opportunities: a few internal links and a sharper title can move them.
  • Pages in the top 3 rarely need retitling. Protect them.
  • A sudden drop across many queries points at a site-wide issue; a drop on one query usually means a competitor improved.
  • Track a handful of key commercial keywords weekly and leave the rest to Search Console's monthly view.

My verdict

Start with Search Console. It's free, it's Google's own data and it covers every search you appear for. Add a rank tracker only when you have a short list of keywords that matter commercially and you need to watch them from a fixed location. And stop judging your SEO by what you see when you search for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check my Google ranking for free?

Open Search Console, go to Performance, switch on Average position and open the Queries tab. It shows your average position for each search your site appeared in.

Why is my ranking different when I search myself?

Google says results are specific to the time, place, device and recent history of the searcher, so your own search is one personalised view.

What does average position mean in Search Console?

In the chart it's the average position of your topmost result across the site; in the table it's the average for that query or page.

Do I need a paid rank tracker?

Not to start. Search Console covers your own site for free. A tracker helps when you need fixed locations, daily checks or competitor positions.

How often should I check my rankings?

Weekly is plenty for a short list of key terms. Daily checks mostly show normal movement and lead to rushed changes.
