Is Splunk Free? Splunk Free Gives You 500 MB a Day

Yes, there's a free version called Splunk Free. It never expires and lets you index 500 MB of data a day, but it's for a single standalone install and removes key features, including alerts, user accounts and even the login screen.

That missing login is the detail I'd want to know before putting it anywhere near real data. Below is what Splunk's own documentation, About Splunk Free, says as of October 2026: the limits, the features you lose, and how it compares with the 60-day Enterprise trial you get first.

Splunk Free limits at a glance

Splunk Free ruleWhat the docs say
Daily indexing500 MB per day
ExpiryThe Free licence doesn't expire
Install typeStandalone, single instance only
Big one-off loadsBulk load larger data sets up to 2 times in a 30-day period
Penalty for overuseSearch is disabled after 3 licence warnings in a rolling 30 days
Storage at full useAround 7GB a month at 500 MB a day

The penalty rule is gentler than it sounds. Splunk says that if you hit 3 warnings, it keeps indexing your data but turns off search, and you get search back once you're under 3 warnings in a 30-day period.

Is Splunk Free right for you?

Splunk's own guide asks two questions, and they're a good test before you install anything.

  1. Will you ingest up to 500 MB of data a day? If so, the Free licence covers you, and Splunk says that's around 7GB of storage a month.
  2. Do you need to load one large data set once and then analyse it? The Free licence lets you bulk load much larger sets up to 2 times within 30 days, which Splunk suggests for forensic review.

If your answer to both is no, because you need ongoing high-volume logging from many machines, Splunk Free isn't built for you, and you'll hit the warning limit fast.

What Splunk Free takes away

Splunk says most Enterprise features are available on the Free licence, with exceptions. These are the ones its documentation lists.

  • Alerting (monitoring) isn't available.
  • Ingest actions aren't available.
  • There are no users or roles, so there's no login: you go straight into Splunk Web as an admin-level user.
  • Only the admin role exists, and you can't add roles or user accounts.
  • Distributed search and search head clustering aren't available.
  • Indexer clustering and deployment management aren't available.
  • Forwarding in TCP or HTTP formats to non-Splunk software isn't available.
  • Report acceleration summaries aren't available.

Read the login point again. Anyone who can reach a Splunk Free instance on your network is logged straight in as admin. For a laptop or a lab that's fine. For anything holding customer data, keep it off shared networks or pay for a licence.

Splunk Free versus the Enterprise trial

When you first install Splunk Enterprise, the docs say you get an Enterprise Trial licence for 60 days, and you can switch to the Free licence at any point before it ends. Switching has consequences:

  1. Any alerts you set up stop working.
  2. Everyone connecting is logged on as admin and the login screen disappears.
  3. Knowledge objects made by users other than admin, and not shared globally, become unavailable.
  4. To keep those objects, promote them to global before you switch.

Who should skip Splunk Free

Splunk Free makes sense when you want to learn Splunk's search language, test a data source or analyse one big file. I'd skip it in four situations:

  • You need alerts to fire when something goes wrong, because alerting isn't available.
  • More than one person needs their own login or permissions, because there are no user accounts.
  • You need to send logs on to non-Splunk tools, because that forwarding is switched off.
  • You want to run more than one Splunk instance, because Free is single-instance only.

None of that makes it a bad product. It just means the free licence is a sandbox, and Splunk is clear that the major limitations are the daily volume cap and the removed features.

How to get Splunk Free

  1. Create a user account on splunk.com.
  2. Check the supported operating systems for the Free licence.
  3. Download the latest Splunk Enterprise for your system from the Free Trials and Downloads page.
  4. Install it. You'll start on the 60-day Enterprise Trial.
  5. Switch to the Free licence when you're ready, after promoting anything you want to keep.

My verdict on Splunk's free option

Splunk Free is a learning and lab tool, and Splunk positions it that way: practise searches and data ingestion without worrying about a licence. It isn't a free security monitoring system for a business, because there are no alerts and no access control. If you need that, compare the main Splunk alternatives, Splunk vs Datadog and my list of SIEM tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is Splunk Free really free forever?

Yes. Splunk's documentation says the Free licence doesn't expire. It's limited to 500 MB of indexing a day on a single standalone install.

What happens if I go over 500 MB a day on Splunk Free?

You get a licence violation warning. After 3 warnings in a rolling 30-day window, Splunk keeps indexing but disables search until you're back under 3 warnings.

Does Splunk Free have alerts?

No. Splunk lists alerting (monitoring) as unavailable on the Free licence.

Can I add users to Splunk Free?

No. There are no users or roles, only the admin role, and there's no login screen.

Can I load a big data set into Splunk Free?

Yes, occasionally. Splunk says the Free licence lets you bulk load much larger data sets up to 2 times within a 30-day period, which is useful for a one-off forensic review.

Can Splunk Free forward data to other tools?

Only to other Splunk platform instances. Splunk says forwarding in TCP or HTTP formats to non-Splunk software isn't available on Free.

How long is the Splunk Enterprise trial?

When you install Splunk Enterprise you get a 60-day Enterprise Trial licence, and you can switch to Free at any time before it ends.
