Best Kitchen Display Systems (2026): 11 KDS Options

The best kitchen display systems put orders on a screen in the kitchen instead of paper tickets, so cooks see what to make, in what order, and how long each ticket has been waiting. Some are standalone KDS apps that work alongside your existing till, while others come built into a full restaurant POS. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

Paper tickets get lost, smudged and misread, usually during the busiest hour of the night. A kitchen screen keeps every order visible, shows modifications clearly and tells front of house when food's ready. It doesn't get lost under a pan.

The eleven kitchen display systems below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If your till is due an upgrade too, my guide to the best POS systems for small businesses is a good companion.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free allowance or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

So when you set up a kitchen screen, make allergy notes obvious on every ticket, in a colour or position nobody can skim past. It's a small setting that's easy to forget. Speed matters, but a missed allergy note matters more, and a screen makes it easier to get right than a handwritten ticket.

Standalone KDS apps versus POS-built screens

A standalone KDS app makes sense when you're happy with your till and only want screens in the kitchen. You keep your menus where they are and add the display on top.

A KDS built into your POS makes sense when you're choosing a system from scratch. Orders, menus and timings live in one place, and there's one company to call when something goes wrong on a Saturday night.

Questions to ask a KDS vendor

  1. Does it work with the POS I already use?
  2. Can it route items to different stations, such as grill and bar?
  3. How are allergy notes and modifications shown?
  4. Does it show ticket times and late orders clearly?
  5. Can online and delivery orders appear on the same screen?
  6. What happens if the internet drops mid-service?

Signs your kitchen is ready for screens

  • Tickets go missing during a rush. Put orders on screen.
  • Cooks shout across the pass. Route items by station.
  • Delivery orders arrive on separate tablets. Bring them together.
  • You can't see which tables wait longest. Track ticket times.

My plain advice on choosing a kitchen display system

Run a trial during a real busy service, not a quiet afternoon. You'll learn more from one Friday night than from any demo, and your cooks will tell you straight away whether the screen helps or gets in the way.

Put the screen where the person calling orders can see it without walking, and set the colours for late tickets before you go live. If you're also juggling reservations, my roundup of AI tools for restaurant bookings helps with the front of house side.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kitchen display system?

A kitchen display system, or KDS, shows restaurant orders on a screen in the kitchen instead of printing paper tickets.

Is there a free KDS?

Yes. One app in this list says its kitchen display is completely free, and it pairs with the same company's till.

Can I add a KDS to my existing POS?

Often, yes. Standalone kitchen display apps work alongside a POS you already have, so you don't have to replace your till.

What are the nine major food allergens?

According to the FDA: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.

Do I need special screens for a KDS?

Many systems run on tablets or standard screens, but kitchens are hot and greasy, so check what each vendor supports.

Can a KDS show delivery orders?

Many can show dine-in, takeaway and delivery orders on one screen, so check integration with your delivery apps.
