A Snapchat Recap is a Story that Snapchat makes from the Snaps you saved to Memories over the past year, and if you have one, you'll find it in your Memories. Not everyone gets one, they aren't available on request, and if you dismiss it, it's gone for good.
That last point is the one that catches people. Swipe it away by mistake and Snapchat says it's removed permanently. There's no undo.
Below is where to find your Recap, why yours might be missing, how to edit it and what to do if it won't load. It's all from Snapchat Support, read in October 2026.
What a Snapchat Recap is
Snapchat describes it as a Story made from Snaps you saved to Memories over the past year. It highlights the places you've gone, the things you've done and the friends you've seen. Think of it as Snapchat's version of a year in review, built only from what you chose to save.
That's the key to understanding it. It isn't made from every Snap you sent. It's made from Memories, so if you rarely save Snaps, there's not much for Snapchat to work with.
How to find your Snapchat Recap
- Open Snapchat on the Camera screen.
- Swipe up to open Memories.
- Look for your Recap there. Snapchat says that if you have one, that's where it appears.
- Tap it to watch it like any other Story.
If you can't spot it, try the magnifying glass at the top of Memories. Snapchat says Memories has a smart search tool with suggested categories, and it's quicker than scrolling.
Why you might not have a Snapchat Recap
| Reason | What Snapchat says |
|---|---|
| You didn't save many Snaps | Whether you get a Recap depends on factors like how many Memories you saved |
| You asked for one | Recaps aren't available on request |
| It's expired | Recaps are available for a limited time only |
| You dismissed or hid it | It's removed for good |
| Your Snaps are in My Eyes Only | Recaps don't include Snaps saved to My Eyes Only |
So there's no form to fill in and no Support ticket that will create one. If you didn't get a Recap this time, the way to get one in future is to save more of your Snaps to Memories through the year.
How to edit your Snapchat Recap
You can take Snaps out of it. Snapchat's steps:
- Open your Recap in Memories.
- Find the Snap you don't want in it.
- Tap the dots in the top corner.
- Tap Remove Snap.
Be careful which option you tap. Removing one Snap keeps the Recap. Dismissing or hiding the Recap removes the whole thing permanently.
What to do if your Snapchat Recap won't load
Snapchat gives three steps if it's taking longer than expected:
- Keep Snapchat open on the Memories page while you're on Wi-Fi.
- Quit the app, then open it again.
- Make sure you've updated Snapchat to the latest version.
Recaps are built from your saved Memories, so a slow connection or an old app version is the usual culprit. Give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi before you try anything else.
Recap and privacy
Your Recap is built from your own Memories, and it sits in your own Memories, so it's yours to watch first. The detail people miss is My Eyes Only. Snapchat says Recaps don't include Snaps saved there, which means anything you've moved into My Eyes Only stays out of it.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That works both ways. If you'd rather a Snap never turned up in a Recap at all, My Eyes Only is the place for it. If you want a Snap included, keep it in your main Memories.
Recap vs a Story you post
| Snapchat Recap | A Story you post | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | Snapchat, from your saved Memories | You |
| Where it lives | In your Memories | On your Story |
| How long it lasts | A limited time only | Depends on your Story settings |
| Can you get it back after removing it? | No, Snapchat says it's gone for good | Only if you saved it first |
| Can you ask for one? | No, Recaps aren't available on request | You post whenever you like |
How to keep the moments in your Recap
Because a Recap is temporary, the Snaps inside it are what matter. They're still in your Memories after the Recap expires, unless you delete them. If you want copies off your phone, download all your Snapchat Memories and you'll have every Snap the Recap was built from.
And if you're tidying up, read how deleting Memories works first. Snapchat says a deleted Snap is erased from its servers as soon as possible, so it won't appear in next year's Recap either. To keep a Story you posted rather than one Snapchat made, see saving a Snapchat Story.
My verdict
Open Memories and look for your Recap now, because it won't wait for you. Remove any Snap you don't want in it with the dots menu, but don't dismiss the whole thing unless you're sure. If you didn't get one, there's nothing to request: save more Snaps to Memories over the coming year, and keep the ones you love out of My Eyes Only if you want them included. Checking takes a minute, and once a Recap has gone, Snapchat can't bring it back.
