AutoCAD vs SolidWorks: 2D Drafting or 3D Product Design?

Pick AutoCAD if your work is precise 2D drawings and documentation, with some 3D, across architecture, MEP, electrical or plant layouts. Pick SolidWorks if you design physical products and need 3D parts, assemblies, simulation and product data management in one family of tools. Both are serious CAD software, but they're built for different jobs, so the right one depends on what you hand over at the end.

I read Autodesk's AutoCAD overview and 2027 features pages, then the SolidWorks home page and Dassault Systemes' SolidWorks product page. Both are CAD software, but their makers describe two different kinds of work.

Where AutoCAD earns its keep

Autodesk describes AutoCAD as computer-aided design software for precise 2D and 3D drafting, design and modelling with solids, surfaces and mesh objects. Its users are students, architects, designers, engineers, project managers, real estate developers and construction professionals. The industry toolsets are easy to overlook: electrical design, plant design, architecture layouts, MEP layouts, mechanical design, 3D mapping and raster conversion are all in the box on Windows.

The 2027 release leans into teamwork on DWG files. Checkout lets you take only the geometry you need from a shared drawing so several people can work in parallel, and Geometry Cleanup finds common drawing errors in one place. There's also an Autodesk Assistant tech preview that adds Model Context Protocol workflows, and ArcGIS basemaps for grounding site plans in real satellite and street maps.

What SolidWorks is built for

Dassault Systemes pitches SolidWorks at engineers and designers who create, collaborate on and deliver products. The family covers 3D CAD, Simulation for checking performance, reliability and safety before you commit to prototypes, data management that scales from small teams up, and manufacturing tools through DELMIAWorks. SolidWorks 2027 adds what the company calls hundreds of enhancements and AI capabilities across CAD, Simulation, Data Management, ECAD and DraftSight.

It's also moving into the browser. Dassault Systemes says the next generation of SolidWorks apps is browser-based and mobile-ready, connected to its 3DEXPERIENCE platform for sharing and storage, with AI, machine learning and generative design. The community it talks about is large, more than 8 million users, which matters when you're hiring or looking for training.

The detail most comparisons skip

AutoCAD isn't only a 2D tool, and SolidWorks isn't only 3D. Autodesk sells AutoCAD LT for 2D-only work and keeps 3D modelling in full AutoCAD, while SolidWorks bundles DraftSight for 2D CAD. So the real question isn't 2D against 3D. It's whether your deliverable is a set of drawings or a product you'll simulate, manage and manufacture.

One licensing point from Autodesk is useful too: an AutoCAD subscription gives you the current version and three previous versions, and you can install it on more than one computer but only use it on one at a time.

How to decide

  1. Do you mostly produce floor plans, layouts or construction drawings? Start with AutoCAD.
  2. Do you design parts and assemblies that need testing before a prototype? Look at SolidWorks and its Simulation tools.
  3. Do you need a Mac? Autodesk lists AutoCAD for macOS; check SolidWorks' system requirements for your setup before you commit.
  4. Are you a student? Autodesk offers free one-year educational access, and SolidWorks runs student programmes.
  5. Still unsure? Both offer a free trial, so try each on a real job from your own work.

My advice on AutoCAD or SolidWorks

If your job ends in drawings, whether that's an architect's plan, an MEP layout or a site plan, AutoCAD is the tool your clients and contractors expect, and its toolsets save you real time. If your job ends in a physical product, SolidWorks gives you the 3D modelling, simulation and data management that product teams work in. I wouldn't pick on brand loyalty. I'd pick on the file your client or factory needs from you.

Do you make CAD or product design software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.

Frequently asked questions

Is AutoCAD 2D or 3D?

Both. Autodesk says AutoCAD covers precise 2D and 3D drafting, design and modelling, while AutoCAD LT is the 2D-only version.

Does SolidWorks do 2D drawings?

Yes. Dassault Systemes includes DraftSight 2D CAD in the SolidWorks family alongside 3D CAD, Simulation and Data Management.

Can I use AutoCAD on a Mac?

Yes. Autodesk says AutoCAD runs on Windows and macOS, and every subscription includes AutoCAD on the web and mobile.

Is there a free version for students?

Autodesk offers free one-year educational access for eligible students and educators, renewable while you stay eligible. SolidWorks runs programmes for students and makers.

How many versions of AutoCAD can I use?

Autodesk says a subscription lets you install and use the current version and three previous versions.
