How to Make a Public Profile on Snapchat (and Why You Might Not Have One)

To make a public profile on Snapchat, tap your Bitmoji or Story to open your profile, tap the Public Profile button, then add a profile photo, bio, location and background image. If you don't see the button, Snapchat says it's usually your age, a missing birthday or a past Community Guidelines issue.

Here's the surprise: most people aged 16 and over already have a public profile waiting. You don't create it from nothing, you start using it.

Below is how to set yours up, why the button might be missing, a table of what you get, and the birthday change that deletes it. The facts come from Snapchat Support, read in October 2026.

You may already have a public profile

Snapchat says that in most countries, if you're 16 or older, you'll have the ability to add content you share publicly to a public page within your profile. That's why some people find a public profile they don't remember making.

Snapchat's reason is simple: a profile photo, cover photo and bio make it easier for your real friends to find and add you.

How to make a public profile on Snapchat, step by step

  1. Open Snapchat and tap your Bitmoji or your Story to open your profile.
  2. Tap the Public Profile button.
  3. Add a profile picture.
  4. Write a short bio.
  5. Add your location if it helps people find you.
  6. Add a background image.
  7. Add a Story or a public post so there's something to see.

Snapchat's own Support page sums it up as adding a profile picture, bio, location and background image. Do those four first. A public profile with nothing on it gives people no reason to stay. My guide to adding a bio on Snapchat has wording ideas if you're stuck.

What to put on your public profile first

If you run a business or want new people to follow you, the first impression is the profile itself. Keep the bio to one clear line about who you are and what you post. Use a profile photo people will recognise, ideally the same one you use elsewhere. Add a location only if it helps someone decide to follow you, such as a local shop or service. Then post one public Story straight away, because an empty page gives a visitor nothing to subscribe to.

Why you don't have a public profile button

Snapchat lists three reasons the Public Profile button might be missing.

ReasonWhat Snapchat saysWhat to do
AgeThe minimum age is 16, but laws where you live may set a different minimumCheck the local rules or ask a parent or guardian
No birthday setIf you qualify and don't see one, you may need to set your birthdayAdd your birthday in Snapchat settings
Past violationsYou may not have one if you've broken the Community Guidelines beforeThere's no quick fix listed for this

The birthday one is the easy win. If you're over 16 and the button isn't there, check your birthday is filled in before you look for anything more complicated.

The birthday change that deletes your public profile

This is the line in Snapchat's help centre that people miss. If your birthday showed you were 16 or older when you saved your public content, and you later change your birthday to under 16, your public profile and all of its content will be deleted.

So never fiddle with your birthday to test a feature. It can wipe everything you've posted publicly, and Snapchat's help page doesn't describe any way to get that content back.

What you get with a public profile

Snapchat splits features between a standard public profile and a Creator Account. Here's the short version from its comparison page.

One reassurance from Snapchat: creating a public profile doesn't change any of your existing contact or Story privacy settings. Your friends-only Story stays friends-only.

Public profile, Professional Account or Business Profile?

Snapchat names three main types. A Public Profile is for personal or Creator accounts sharing public content. A Professional Account is a setting some people can switch between Creator and Business, and it's limited to people aged 18 and over. A Business Profile is for commercial, branded or advertiser accounts.

Not sure which you have? Snapchat says if you used Ads Manager to create the profile, it's likely a Business Profile. If you didn't, it's probably a personal public profile for creators.

If you'd rather not have one

You can take it down again. My guide to deleting your public profile on Snapchat covers what disappears and what stays. And if you only want people you know to find you, my guide to finding someone on Snapchat shows how friends can still add you without a public page.

My verdict

If you're a small business, a creator or anyone who wants to be found, switch the public profile on and fill in all four basics the same day. It costs you nothing in privacy, because your existing Story settings don't change. If you're under 16, the button simply won't be there, and that's by design. Whatever your age, leave your birthday alone once it's set.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to have a public profile on Snapchat?

Snapchat says the minimum age is 16, but the laws in your country or region may set a different minimum age.

Why can't I see the Public Profile button on Snapchat?

Snapchat lists three reasons: you're under the minimum age, your birthday isn't set in your settings, or the account has broken the Community Guidelines in the past.

Does a public profile make my Snapchat Story public?

No. Snapchat says creating a public profile doesn't change your existing contact or Story privacy settings, and public content goes on a separate public Story.

What happens if I change my birthday to under 16?

If your birthday showed 16 or older when you saved public content and you change it to under 16, Snapchat deletes your public profile and all of its content.
