Best AI Agent Frameworks (2026): 11 Frameworks Compared

The best AI agent frameworks give developers the building blocks for agents that plan, call tools and work through tasks, from single assistants to teams of agents. Some are open source libraries in Python or TypeScript, while others come from the companies behind the leading AI models. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

Building an AI agent from scratch sounds simple until you need memory, tool calls, retries, guardrails and a way to see what went wrong. A framework handles that plumbing, so your team can spend its time on what the agent should do for your customers.

The eleven AI agent frameworks below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the framework's own website or documentation, read this week. Before you build, my AI agent test plan template helps you decide how you'll know it's working.

AI agent frameworks side by side

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free allowance, freeware or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where the software is widely known to be free or there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you rely on it.

Eleven AI agent frameworks to compare

Claude Agent SDK

Best for: Developers building on Claude who want the same agent loop and tools that power Claude Code inside their own products.

CrewAI

Best for: Businesses that want to plan, build and run multi-agent automations, with an open source framework underneath the platform.

Google ADK

Best for: Builders who want an open source kit for production agents, including sequential, loop and parallel multi-agent workflows.

LangGraph

Best for: Engineers who want detailed control over how agents run, with an MIT-licensed open source library that's free to use.

Mastra

Best for: TypeScript developers who want an open source framework for agents and AI apps that slots into React and other web frameworks.

Microsoft Agent Framework

Best for: Microsoft-stack teams who want graph-based workflows for multi-agent orchestration from the successor to Semantic Kernel and AutoGen.

OpenAI Agents SDK

Best for: Developers building on OpenAI models who want an SDK covering sandbox agents, agent memory, realtime and voice agents.

Pydantic AI

Best for: Python developers who already use Pydantic and want an agent framework from the same team, with tracing through Logfire.

Strands Agents

Best for: Builders who want an open source toolkit for production agents, with structured output and guides for coordinating several agents.

Upsonic

Best for: Banks, fintechs and insurers that want an open source agent framework focused on accuracy, control and auditability.

VoltAgent

Best for: JavaScript teams who want an MIT-licensed TypeScript agent framework paired with an operations console for watching agents.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Where to start for your project

  • Detailed control over each step: LangGraph.
  • TypeScript and JavaScript teams: Mastra or VoltAgent.
  • Python teams who like typed code: Pydantic AI.
  • Building on a specific model provider: Claude Agent SDK, OpenAI Agents SDK or Google ADK.
  • Microsoft and AWS stacks: Microsoft Agent Framework or Strands Agents.
  • Planning and running multi-agent automations: CrewAI.
  • Banking, fintech and insurance: Upsonic.

Manage the risk before an agent gets real permissions

NIST says its AI Risk Management Framework is intended for voluntary use and to improve the ability to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use and evaluation of AI products, services and systems.

That matters more for agents than for chatbots, because agents act. Before one can send emails, change records or spend from an account, decide what it's allowed to do, what needs a human sign-off and how you'll log every action.

Open source frameworks versus model vendor SDKs

Open source frameworks work with many models and let you switch providers as models improve. They suit teams who want flexibility and don't mind assembling more of the stack themselves.

Vendor SDKs come from the companies that make the models. They're often the quickest way to use a provider's newest features, but they tie you more closely to that provider.

Questions to ask before you choose an agent framework

  1. Does it support the language my team writes in?
  2. Can it work with more than one model provider?
  3. How does it handle memory between conversations?
  4. Can I see a trace of every step an agent takes?
  5. How do I add human approval for risky actions?
  6. Is it ready for production, or still experimental?

Signs you need an agent framework

  • Your prompts have grown into a tangle of scripts. Give them structure.
  • Tasks need several tools in a row. Let an agent orchestrate them.
  • You can't see why an AI step failed. Add tracing.
  • Customers want answers outside office hours. Build a supervised agent.

Do you make an AI agent framework or developer tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing an AI agent framework

Build the smallest useful agent first, with one tool and a human approving every action. You'll learn more about a framework from one working agent in production than from a week of comparing feature lists.

Choose the framework your team can debug, because agents fail in surprising ways and you'll need to see why. My AI agent failure mode playbook lists the problems to plan for before launch.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI agent framework?

An AI agent framework is a software library that helps developers build agents which plan, use tools and complete tasks with a language model.

Are AI agent frameworks free?

Many are open source and free to use, though you'll still need access to an AI model. The free plan column above shows what each site says.

Do I need to code to use an agent framework?

Yes, frameworks are for developers. Non-developers usually start with no-code agent builders instead.

Should I use one agent or several?

Start with one. Add more agents only when a single agent can't handle the job reliably.

Can an AI agent framework work with any model?

Many support several model providers, while vendor SDKs are built mainly around their own models.

How do I keep an AI agent safe?

Limit its permissions, require human approval for risky actions and log everything it does.
