Best Text to SQL Tools (2026): 10 AI Query Generators

The best text to SQL tools turn a plain English question into a database query, so you can get answers from your data without writing SQL yourself. Some are simple query generators, others are open source agents or AI data analysts. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Plenty of business owners sit on a database full of answers they can't reach. Sales by region, repeat customers, last quarter's best products: the data's there, but the SQL isn't.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're curious how AI and databases fit together, my explainer on what a vector database is explains a newer kind of database that AI tools rely on.

Text to SQL tools side by side

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free account, a free tier or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Give your AI query tool read-only access

OWASP's SQL injection prevention guidance advises minimising the privileges assigned to every database account. Accounts that only need read access should only be granted read access to the tables they need.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

That advice matters even more when an AI writes the queries. Connect a text to SQL tool with a read-only account limited to the tables it needs, and it can't change or delete your data however a question is phrased.

Query generators versus AI data analysts

Query generators write SQL for you to copy, check and run yourself. They suit people learning SQL and analysts who want a head start on tricky queries.

AI data analysts connect to your database, run the queries and return answers or charts directly. They suit teams who want answers rather than code, as long as someone checks the numbers.

Questions to ask before you connect your database

  1. Which databases does it support?
  2. Does it connect directly, or only write queries?
  3. Can I give it read-only access?
  4. Does it explain the SQL it writes?
  5. Where is my data sent and stored?
  6. Can it learn my table names and business terms?

Signs you need a text to SQL tool

  • You wait days for simple reports. Ask the data directly.
  • Only one person knows SQL. Spread the load.
  • You export tables to spreadsheets to answer questions. Query instead.
  • Your team avoids the database. Plain questions lower the barrier.

Do you make a text to SQL or AI query tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a text to SQL tool

Always check the query before you trust the answer. AI tools are quick, but they can misread a column name or join tables the wrong way and still give you a confident number. Ask the tool to explain its SQL in plain words, and sanity-check results against numbers you already know.

Start with a copy of your data or a read-only connection, and describe your tables clearly so the tool learns your business terms. If the database itself is the question, my guide to customer database software covers tools built for exactly that job.

Frequently asked questions

What is a text to SQL tool?

A text to SQL tool turns a question written in plain English into a SQL query that can run against a database.

Can I use text to SQL without knowing SQL?

Yes, though it helps to understand the basics so you can spot a query that doesn't match your question.

Are text to SQL tools safe?

They can be, if you connect them with a read-only account limited to the tables they need, as OWASP advises for database accounts.

Are there free or open source text to SQL tools?

Several are open source or free to use. The free plan column above shows what each tool's own site says.

Which databases do these tools work with?

Most support popular databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and many support others too. Check each tool's list.

How accurate is AI-generated SQL?

It's often right for simple questions but can slip on complex ones, so review the SQL and check results against known numbers.
