The X (formerly Twitter) "Something went wrong" error usually comes from a browser glitch, app bug, server overload, or connection issue. Try reloading, clearing your cache, switching apps, checking X's server status, and updating the app. If nothing works, it's likely a platform-wide fault and you just need to wait it out.

Why X Shows This Error

If you've opened X (formerly Twitter) and been met with a blank screen saying "Something went wrong, but don't fret, let's give it another shot", you're not alone. It's one of the most common errors on the platform, and it rarely means anything is wrong with your account specifically.

Usually it's one of a handful of things: a server hiccup on X's end, a browser or app problem on your end, a poor connection, or occasionally too many people trying to use the platform at once during a high traffic event.

The good news is that most of the time it's temporary. The fixes below are listed in the order I'd try them, starting with the quickest.

Step One: Just Refresh And Wait

Before doing anything else, refresh the page or close and reopen the app. This sounds obvious, but it fixes the issue more often than you'd think because the error is frequently a one-off blip rather than a lasting fault.

If refreshing doesn't help straight away, wait two or three minutes and try again. X's servers sometimes get briefly overloaded, particularly during breaking news or major sporting events, and things settle down on their own.

Check If It's X, Not You

Before you spend time troubleshooting your own device, find out whether the problem is on X's side. You can check independent outage tracking sites that show reports from other users in real time.

You can also search social media on another platform, or ask a friend to check whether they're having the same issue. If lots of people are reporting problems at the same time, there's nothing you can fix locally. You'll just need to wait for X to resolve it.

I'd say this step is worth doing early, because it saves you wasting time clearing caches and reinstalling apps for a problem that isn't yours to fix.

Clear Your Browser Cache And Cookies

If the outage checks come back clear and other people seem to be using X fine, the problem is more likely sat with your browser. A build up of cached data or outdated cookies can cause pages to fail to load.

  1. Open your browser settings
  2. Find the privacy or history section
  3. Clear cached images, files, and cookies for the last 24 hours
  4. Restart the browser fully
  5. Reload X and log back in

This clears out anything stale that might be conflicting with the current version of the site.

Try A Different Browser Or Device

If clearing the cache doesn't help, switch browsers entirely. If you normally use Chrome, try Firefox, Edge, or Safari instead. This helps you work out whether the issue is specific to one browser's settings or extensions.

It's also worth trying X on a completely different device, such as your phone if you were on a laptop, or vice versa. If it works fine elsewhere, the fault sits with the original browser or device, not with X itself.

Browser extensions, particularly ad blockers and privacy tools, can sometimes interfere with how X loads. Try disabling them temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

Update Or Reinstall The X App

On mobile, an outdated app version is a common cause of persistent errors. Check your app store for pending updates and install the latest version.

If you're already up to date and still seeing the error, try deleting the app completely and reinstalling it fresh. This clears out any corrupted local data that an update alone won't fix.

Check Your Connection And Device Settings

A weak or unstable internet connection can trigger loading errors that look identical to a platform fault. Try switching from WiFi to mobile data, or the other way round, to see if that resolves things.

Restarting your router can also help if you've been having general connectivity issues, not just on X.

On mobile, check that the X app has permission to use data or WiFi in your phone's settings, as restricted permissions can sometimes cause loading failures that present as a generic error message.

When There's Nothing You Can Do

Sometimes the error is down to a fault entirely on X's side, such as a server outage or a bug introduced after an update. In these cases, there is no fix on your end, and I won't pretend there is one.

The honest answer is to wait. Check the outage trackers periodically, and try logging back in every half hour or so. Most widescale issues are resolved within a few hours.

If the problem persists for more than a day, you can report it through X's official help centre, though response times vary and there's no guarantee of a quick reply.

Frequently asked questions

Why does X keep saying something went wrong?

It's usually a temporary server issue, a browser cache problem, an outdated app, or a weak connection. It rarely means something is wrong with your specific account, so start with the simple fixes first.

How do I know if X is down for everyone?

Check an independent outage tracking site or ask someone else to try loading X at the same time. If others are reporting the same error, it's a platform wide issue and not something you can fix yourself.

Will clearing my cache delete my X account data?

No. Clearing your browser cache and cookies only removes temporary stored files on your device. It won't delete your posts, followers, or account settings, though you will need to log back in afterwards.

What if none of the fixes work?

If you've tried refreshing, clearing cache, switching devices, and updating the app with no luck, the fault is likely on X's servers. There's nothing more you can do on your end except wait and check back later.
