WireGuard vs OpenVPN: Speed, Setup and When to Use Each

Choose WireGuard for a simple, fast tunnel you can set up in a few lines, especially for personal use, servers and phones where battery life matters. Choose OpenVPN when you need user logins and MFA, central control of IP addresses and routes, or connections from networks that block UDP. Even OpenVPN's own comparison page credits WireGuard with simpler setup; OpenVPN's case is flexibility.

I read WireGuard's home and protocol pages, OpenVPN's Community Edition and Access Server pages, and OpenVPN's own WireGuard comparison. Bear in mind that last one is written by OpenVPN, so I've noted where it gives WireGuard credit too.

WireGuard and OpenVPN at a glance

Why WireGuard feels so simple

WireGuard's home page says it aims to be as easy to configure and deploy as SSH: you exchange public keys and it handles the rest, even roaming between IP addresses as you move networks. It started in the Linux kernel and now runs on Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS and Android. Its cryptography is fixed: the Noise protocol framework, Curve25519, ChaCha20, Poly1305 and BLAKE2s.

The project makes a point of being small. It says WireGuard is meant to be reviewable by a single person, unlike large IPsec or OpenVPN and OpenSSL codebases. OpenVPN's comparison page agrees on one practical benefit: WireGuard stays silent when idle, so it drains a phone battery less than a persistent OpenVPN session.

Where OpenVPN still makes sense

OpenVPN's comparison makes its case clearly. It can run over TCP on port 443 with proxy support, so it connects from hotels, campuses and networks where UDP-only WireGuard simply can't. OpenVPN's page also notes that WireGuard's docs call obfuscation a non-goal. OpenVPN also authenticates users with certificates, username and password, MFA and LDAP or RADIUS, and it hands out dynamic IP pools and pushes routes and DNS, where WireGuard means editing every peer by hand.

Two newer details stood out. OpenVPN says hybrid ML-KEM post-quantum key exchange is on by default with OpenVPN 2.7 and OpenSSL 3.5, while WireGuard's crypto is fixed by design. And on speed, OpenVPN admits WireGuard has been in the Linux kernel since 5.6, while its own kernel acceleration (DCO) only reached the mainline kernel in 6.16, so most installed systems don't have it yet.

Pick in five questions

  1. Is it just you, a home lab or a few servers? WireGuard's simplicity is hard to argue with.
  2. Do people connect from hotel or campus Wi-Fi that may block UDP? OpenVPN over TCP 443 gets through.
  3. Do you need user accounts, MFA or SSO for audits? OpenVPN, with SSO through Access Server or CloudConnexa.
  4. Do you need to bridge Ethernet at Layer 2? Only OpenVPN can.
  5. Is mobile battery life a priority? WireGuard is quieter when idle.

My advice on WireGuard or OpenVPN

For personal use, servers talking to each other and small teams on trusted networks, WireGuard is the faster and simpler choice, and you can be up and running quickly. For a company with staff travelling, compliance checks and a need to manage users centrally, OpenVPN's authentication and TCP fallback earn their extra setup. If you're unsure, try WireGuard on a test machine first and check it connects from the networks your team uses.

Frequently asked questions

Is WireGuard faster than OpenVPN?

WireGuard has been in the Linux kernel since version 5.6. OpenVPN's comparison page says that with Data Channel Offload it reaches similar speeds, but DCO only reached the mainline kernel in 6.16.

Does WireGuard work over TCP?

No. WireGuard sends all packets over UDP. OpenVPN can run over TCP, including port 443, which helps on networks that block UDP.

Is OpenVPN free?

OpenVPN Community Edition is open source. Its commercial Access Server is free for up to 2 simultaneous connections, with all features.

Does WireGuard support user logins or MFA?

WireGuard identifies peers by static key pairs, and OpenVPN's comparison notes that users are out of scope by design. OpenVPN supports certificates, passwords, MFA and LDAP or RADIUS.

Is OpenVPN post-quantum secure?

OpenVPN says hybrid ML-KEM key exchange is on by default with OpenVPN 2.7 and OpenSSL 3.5. It quotes WireGuard as not post-quantum secure by default.
