How to Block Words on TikTok (Comments and Your Feed)

To block words in comments on your TikTok videos, go to Profile, tap the Menu button, then Settings and privacy, Privacy, Comments, and Filter keywords in comments. Turn on Filter specific keywords and add your words. To keep words out of what you watch, TikTok has a separate Filter keywords tool that removes posts containing those words and hashtags from your feeds.

Those are two different jobs, and people often set up one while expecting the other. The comment filter protects your videos. The feed filter cleans up what you see.

Below are the steps for both, the other comment filters TikTok offers, and how filtered comments are handled. Everything comes from TikTok's Support pages, read in October 2026.

Block words in comments on your videos

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top, then select Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Privacy, then Comments.
  4. Below Comment filters, tap Filter keywords in comments.
  5. Turn on Filter specific keywords, tap Add keywords and type the words you want to filter.

Comments on your videos that contain those words are then hidden unless you approve them. They aren't deleted straight away, so you stay in control of what appears.

The other comment filters TikTok gives you

FilterWhat it hidesWhere to find it
Filter specific keywordsComments containing words you addComments, then Filter keywords in comments
Filter unwanted commentsRecent comments that may be offensive or spamComments, under Comment filters
Creator Care ModeInappropriate, offensive or profane comments, plus ones previously reported, deleted or dislikedComments
Filter all commentsEvery comment, until you approve itComments, under Comment filters

TikTok notes that Filter all comments isn't currently available to everyone, so don't worry if you can't see it.

Review comments your filters caught

  1. Tap Profile, then the Menu button, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Privacy, then Comments.
  3. Tap Review filtered comments.
  4. Tap Approve or Delete below each comment.

It's worth checking this every so often. Keyword filters are blunt, and a word you added to stop abuse can also catch a perfectly friendly comment.

Block words from your feeds

This is the setting for what you watch rather than what people say to you. TikTok describes Filter keywords as a way to remove content containing specific words and their variations, and hashtags, from your feeds. Its help on recommendations lists the feeds it covers: For You, Following, Friends, LIVE and STEM.

TikTok adds a newer option here: after you add a keyword, you can choose to let AI filter out similar keywords, like synonyms and their variations. That's useful for topics that have lots of slang or misspellings.

TikTok keeps its feed tools in your content preferences in Settings and privacy, where Manage topics also lives, so look there for Filter keywords.

Other ways to clean up your For You feed

  • Not interested: tell TikTok you don't care for a post and you'll see fewer like it.
  • Manage topics: in Settings and privacy, then Content preferences, then Manage topics, slide each topic up or down. It only affects your For You feed.
  • Refresh your feed: give your For You feed a fresh start. My guide to resetting your TikTok algorithm walks through it.
  • Why this post: tap Share on a post, then Why this post, to see the reasons it was shown to you.

TikTok says topic changes can take some time to show, so give it a few days of normal scrolling before deciding it hasn't worked.

Choose who can comment at all

Sometimes filtering words isn't enough and you'd rather narrow who can comment. In Settings and privacy, go to Privacy, then Comments, then Allow comments from. You can pick Everyone (public accounts only), Followers (private accounts only) or Friends, which means followers you follow back. You can also turn comments off on a single post in its privacy settings.

Turn comments off on one video

For a video you know will attract the wrong crowd, you can skip filters and switch comments off for that post alone.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Before you post: on the Post screen, tap the More options button and turn Allow comments off.
  2. On a post that's already live: go to the post on your profile, tap More options, then Privacy settings at the bottom (you may need to swipe), and turn Allow comments off.

You can switch them back on later the same way, so it's a good option for a busy few days rather than a permanent change.

What keyword filters won't do

  • They don't block the person. To stop someone altogether, you'd block or report them. See how to report someone on TikTok.
  • Comment filters don't change your feed, and feed filters don't touch your comments.
  • They hide comments rather than delete them, so check Review filtered comments now and then.

My verdict

If you post on TikTok, add the words you never want under your videos to Filter keywords in comments, switch on Filter unwanted comments, and check filtered comments weekly. If it's your own viewing you want to clean up, use the feed's Filter keywords with the AI option for similar words. Set both up once and TikTok does the work from then on.
