Roblox Age Verification: How the Age Check Works and What It Changes

Roblox age verification is called an age check. You do it in Settings, then Account info, then Age Group, using either a selfie video (Facial Age Estimation) or a government photo ID. Without one, Roblox uses the birthday you signed up with and keeps chat off, so the age check is what turns chat on and opens games outside the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogues.

Roblox made the check a requirement for chat after its November 2025 announcement. It started in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in early December, then spread to the rest of the world wherever chat is available. If your child suddenly can't chat, this is almost always why.

What needs an age check on Roblox

Roblox's help centre lists the features that only work after an age check:

  • Chat, including chat without filters with Trusted Friends
  • Team Create in Roblox Studio, so you can build a game with someone else
  • Age-restricted content (16+ and 18+) and games with a Content May Vary rating
  • Games outside the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogues
  • Inviting early testers to your game, or being an early tester
  • Viewing and sharing social media links on profiles and game pages (13+ only)

Roblox says more features may need an age check over time, and access also depends on account settings and region.

How to do a Roblox age check, step by step

  1. Log in on a device with a camera.
  2. Open Settings. On desktop, the gear icon top right. On mobile, More (...) bottom right, then the gear icon.
  3. Go to Account info.
  4. Find Age Group and choose Continue with selfie for Facial Age Estimation, or Continue with ID for a government ID.
  5. Follow the prompts. Persona captures a short selfie-style video and Roblox places you in an age group.

The age groups you land in

The check doesn't give Roblox your exact age. It puts you in a band, and that band decides who you can chat with.

Age groupAccount typeWhat it means
Under 9Roblox KidsGames rated for your age; chat stays off until a parent allows it
9 to 12Roblox SelectChat with similar age groups or Trusted Friends, with parental permission
13 to 15Roblox SelectChat with similar age groups or Trusted Friends, plus more features
16 to 17RobloxEverything except 18+ games, including Content May Vary games
18 and overRobloxFull access to games and features

Roblox gives its own examples: a user estimated at 12 can chat with users aged 15 or younger in experience chat, and nobody 16 or older can start a chat with them. A user estimated at 18 can chat with users 16 and older, and can add a younger sibling as a Trusted Connection as long as the sibling is 13 or older.

The catch: what happens if the estimate is wrong

This is the part that trips families up. If someone who signed up as over 13 is estimated as under 13, Roblox gives a 48-hour grace period before the age group changes, and you can accept the result early. Being placed in the 5 to 8 or 9 to 12 group also removes certain personal data from the account, including the email address and phone number.

  • Estimated too young and over 13? Go to Settings, then Account info, and choose Continue with ID to verify the birthday with a photo ID.
  • Under 13? ID verification isn't open to you. Use the pencil icon next to the birthday, or ask a linked parent to change it.
  • Parents get one change. A linked parent can only modify a child's birthday once, so get it right the first time.
  • Checked into 18+ by mistake? Roblox lets you undo the age-checked status through its How do I change my age? article.
  • ID verification is close to permanent. Once your ID is verified, that status can only be undone once per account, and support can't verify or remove IDs by hand.

Is the selfie check private?

Roblox says the images and video are processed by Persona and deleted immediately after processing, and that Roblox doesn't receive or store any biometric data from Facial Age Estimation. It also says the method was tested for accuracy by the Age Check Certification Scheme in the UK. You may still be asked to check again later: Roblox says users can be prompted to re-check to keep Trusted Friends and expressive chat, and again if it spots a mismatch with your estimated age.

If you're a parent

Roblox's own advice is to link your parent account to your child's first, then do the selfie check on your own account so you know what to expect. That stops the common mistake of a parent's face being scanned on the child's account. Pair the check with Parental Controls, because, as Roblox puts it, no system is foolproof.

If you're weighing up whether to let a child on Roblox at all, it helps to know what the free account includes: our guide to whether Roblox is free covers that, and if you want alternatives, here are some games like Roblox.

My advice

Do the selfie check in good light on the account owner's own device, and if it gets the age wrong, fix it straight away with ID (13 and over) or the one-time parent change. Don't let a child repeat the selfie hoping for an older result: Roblox re-checks when it spots a mismatch, and a wrong band is what blocks chat in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify my age on Roblox?

Go to Settings, then Account info, then Age Group, and choose Continue with selfie for Facial Age Estimation or Continue with ID to use a government photo ID.

Do you have to do an age check to chat on Roblox?

Yes. Roblox requires an age check to use chat. Without one, it uses the birthday you signed up with and chat stays off.

Can under 13s use ID verification on Roblox?

No. ID verification is only available to users 13 and above. Younger users can use Facial Age Estimation or have a linked parent change their birthday.

Does Roblox keep my selfie?

Roblox says images and video are deleted after processing by its vendor Persona, and that it doesn't receive or store any biometric data from Facial Age Estimation.

What if Roblox gets my age wrong?

If you're 13 or older, verify your birthday with an ID in Account info. If you're under 18, a linked parent can update the birthday, but parents can only modify a child's birthday once.
