Yes, YouTube Music is free to use with ads. The free version lets you play songs, podcasts and music videos on demand, with queuing, repeat and unlimited skipping. What you don't get for free is background play for music, music downloads, audio-only music playback and ad-free listening. Those come with YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium.
I get asked this by people who run playlists in a shop, a studio or a home office, and by creators who want background music while they work. The free app is more generous than most people think, but the one feature you'll miss most, music that keeps playing when your screen is off, sits behind the paywall.
Below I've set out exactly what Google says the free tier includes, what Premium adds, and the cheaper plan that looks like a shortcut but doesn't cover music at all. All of it comes from YouTube's own help centre, checked in October 2026.
What free YouTube Music includes
Google's help centre lists what ad-supported YouTube Music gives you without a membership:
- On-demand playback for podcasts, songs and music videos.
- Audio-only, background play and downloads for most podcasts.
- Queuing, repeat and unlimited skipping.
- The Samples tab and Music Tuner.
- Fan badges, such as top listener.
So on the free tier you can pick exactly the song you want and skip as often as you like. That's a bigger deal than it sounds, because some free music apps limit both.
YouTube Music free vs Premium side by side
| Feature | Free (with ads) | YouTube Music Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Play any song or video on demand | Yes | Yes |
| Unlimited skips | Yes | Yes |
| Background play for podcasts | Yes, most podcasts | Yes |
| Background play for music | No | Yes |
| Music downloads | No | Yes |
| Audio-only music playback | No | Yes |
| Music without ads | No | Yes |
One catch Google flags itself: Premium members may still hear ads on podcasts, and creators can still embed their own promotions in their content.
Why Premium Lite won't fix this
This is the trap I'd warn anyone about. YouTube's cheaper Premium Lite plan sounds like a halfway house, but Google's help page says Premium Lite doesn't include YouTube Music Premium. Its background play and downloads don't work on music content such as official music videos, Art Tracks or children's songs, and ads may still appear on music.
If music is the reason you're upgrading, Lite is the wrong plan. My explainer on what YouTube Premium Lite covers goes through the rest of its limits.
YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium?
Both include the music features. Google's help centre says YouTube Premium includes music on the YouTube Music app ad-free, offline and on the go, plus ad-free videos across YouTube on phones, compatible smart TVs and games consoles. YouTube Music Premium offers a similar experience inside the YouTube Music app, without the wider YouTube benefits.
So the rule of thumb is simple. If you only care about music, YouTube Music Premium covers it. If you also watch a lot of YouTube videos and hate the adverts, YouTube Premium covers both.
Small extras that are Premium-only on music
A couple of smaller features trip people up. Google says picture-in-picture on music content, such as official music videos and Art Tracks, is an exclusive benefit for Premium members, while picture-in-picture on non-music videos is available to everyone on iOS and Android. Smart Downloads, which adds recommended music to your library automatically for offline listening, is also a membership feature.
Google also notes that some YouTube Music features aren't available with supervised accounts, and that the product can differ in some countries and regions.
Background play settings once you upgrade
If you do go Premium, Google lets you choose how background play behaves. In the app settings, under Background and Downloads, you can pick Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers, which only plays in the background when your phone is connected to an audio output. Google adds that background play is a mobile app feature, so it applies on your phone or tablet rather than on a TV.

How to start listening for free
- Install the YouTube Music app on your phone or open it in a browser.
- Sign in with your Google account so your likes and playlists save.
- Search for an artist, song or podcast and press play.
- Use Music Tuner or the Samples tab to find new tracks.
- Keep the app open on screen while music plays, because background play for music is a Premium feature.

Is free YouTube Music enough for a business?
For your own listening while you work, the free version is fine, as long as you don't mind adverts and keeping the app open. For background music in a public space like a salon or café, think carefully. A personal streaming account is built for personal listening, so check the terms before you play it to customers.
Comparing it with Spotify's free tier? I've set out how Spotify Premium can be had for free through trials and family plans, which is a useful side-by-side if you're choosing one service.
My verdict
YouTube Music is free and it's good. You get on-demand songs and unlimited skips without paying. If you listen with the screen on, stay free. If you want music in your pocket with the screen off, or offline on a flight, you'll need YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium, not Premium Lite.
Frequently asked questions
Is YouTube Music completely free?
The app is free with ads. Background play for music, music downloads, audio-only music playback and ad-free music need a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium membership.
Can you play YouTube Music in the background for free?
Only for most podcasts. Google lists background play for music as a Premium benefit, so free users need to keep the app open for songs.
Does YouTube Premium Lite include YouTube Music?
No. Google says Premium Lite doesn't include YouTube Music Premium, and its background play and downloads don't work on music content.
Can you skip songs on free YouTube Music?
Yes. Google lists queuing, repeat and unlimited skipping as part of ad-supported YouTube Music.
Does YouTube Premium include YouTube Music Premium?
Yes. Google says YouTube Premium members can use the YouTube Music app ad-free, offline and with background play.
Will Premium remove every ad?
Not quite. Google says Premium members may still experience ads on podcasts, and creators can include their own promotions.
