Is Veo 3 Free? How to Try Google's Video Model Without Paying

Partly. Veo 3 isn't free in the Gemini app, where video generation needs a Google AI plan. But Google Flow, Google's AI filmmaking tool, gives every account 50 free credits a day, with or without a subscription, and those credits can be spent on Veo 3.1 video clips. That's enough for a handful of short test clips, not a steady stream of finished videos.

Veo is Google's AI video model, and the 3.1 versions are the ones you'll see in Google's tools right now. If you searched for Veo 3 free because you want to make a short product clip or social video without a subscription, Google Flow is the route. Here's how far the free credits go, using Google's own help pages.

Where you can and can't use Veo for free

WhereFree?What Google says
Google FlowYes, limited50 Google Flow credits per day for every account
Gemini app video generationNoA personal account needs a Google AI plan
Gemini app with a work accountDepends on planNeeds a qualifying Workspace licence

Google's Gemini Apps help page also says video generation in the Gemini app now uses Gemini Omni, its newer video model. So if you specifically want Veo 3.1, Flow is where you choose it.

What 50 free credits a day buys

Google's Flow help centre lists the credit cost of each generation. These are the Veo 3.1 costs it lists for accounts that aren't on Google AI Ultra:

ModelClip lengthsCredits per generation
Veo 3.1 Lite4, 6 or 8 seconds10
Veo 3.1 Fast4, 6 or 8 seconds20
Veo 3.1 Quality8 seconds100

Do the maths and the picture is clear. Fifty credits covers a few Lite or Fast clips a day. It doesn't cover a single Veo 3.1 Quality clip, which costs 100 credits on its own. Google also notes that costs are per generation, not per request, and a single request can create two videos, so one click can use more credits than you expect.

The free-tier rules most people miss

  • Peak hours: Google says that roughly 2 PM to 5 PM UTC, you may not be able to generate videos without a subscription. You can still make images and use the Flow agent.
  • No rollover: unused daily credits don't carry over to the next day.
  • The clock starts on first use: Google says your daily refresh is triggered by your first generation, so the next batch arrives the following day.
  • No upscaling: Google lists 1080p upscaling for subscribers only.

If you're in the UK or another European country and planning to edit an uploaded video, also check availability first. Google's Gemini help page says uploading videos for edits isn't available in the EEA, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and some US states.

How to try Veo 3.1 free in Google Flow

  1. Go to Google Flow and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Start a new project and open the prompt box settings.
  3. Choose Veo 3.1 Lite or Fast so your 50 credits stretch further, and check the credit cost shown before you generate.
  4. Write a specific prompt: subject, setting, camera movement and mood in one or two sentences.
  5. Generate outside the busy afternoon window in UTC if your clip won't start.

What else Flow gives you without paying

Video isn't the only thing in Google Flow. Google's model page says all users can access its Gemini Omni video models, and lists Nano Banana 2 Lite as the image model available at no charge, which is useful for making the start frames and reference images you feed into a video. Google also says Gemini Omni can generate clips at 360p at half the credit cost of 720p, a cheaper way to test an idea before you spend credits on a Veo clip.

A practical workflow on the free credits: sketch the scene as an image first, test the motion at low resolution, then spend your Veo credits only on the version you're happy with.

When a paid plan makes sense

Google says subscribers keep the 50 daily credits and get extra monthly credits on top: Google AI Plus subscribers receive an extra 200 each month, and Google AI Pro subscribers an extra 1,000. Those monthly credits refresh at the start of the billing cycle and don't roll over either.

My verdict

Veo 3 is free to try, not free to rely on. Use Google Flow's 50 daily credits on Veo 3.1 Lite or Fast to test ideas, product shots and short social clips. If you need Quality clips, regular output or access during busy hours, a Google AI plan is the realistic route.

Frequently asked questions

Is Veo 3 free to use?

You can try Veo 3.1 for free in Google Flow, which gives every account 50 credits a day. Video generation in the Gemini app needs a Google AI plan.

How many free Veo videos can I make a day?

It depends on the model. Google lists Veo 3.1 Lite at 10 credits and Fast at 20 credits per generation for non-Ultra accounts, against 50 free credits a day.

Can I make Veo 3.1 Quality videos for free?

Not with the daily allowance alone. Google lists Veo 3.1 Quality at 100 credits per generation, which is more than the 50 free daily credits.

Do unused Google Flow credits roll over?

No. Google says unused daily credits don't roll over, and monthly subscription credits don't roll over either.

Can I see my remaining Flow credits?

Google says the credit activity view is for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers. Free users get 50 credits a day, refreshed the day after first use.

Is Gemini Omni the same as Veo?

No. Google describes Gemini Omni as its newer video model, used for video in the Gemini app, while Flow also offers the Veo 3.1 models.

Why can't I generate a video in Google Flow?

Google says that roughly 2 PM to 5 PM UTC, you may not be able to generate videos without a subscription. Try again outside that window.
