Yes, Google Vids has a free option. Google says you can use basic Google Vids features with your Google Account, and personal Google accounts get 50 credits a month for Gemini AI features such as voiceovers and Help me create. The credits reset at midnight Pacific time on the first of each month and don't roll over. Google lists separate, larger allowances for Workspace business plans and for Google AI Pro and Ultra.
Google Vids is Google's video maker, and it can turn a Google Slides deck straight into a video. Google describes it as an AI-powered video creation app for work. For a small business that wants a quick explainer, a training clip or a product walkthrough without learning a full editing suite, the free version is a reasonable place to start.
All the details below come from Google's own help centre and Workspace Updates blog, checked in October 2026. Google says the limits and features are subject to change, so treat the credit numbers as a snapshot and check your account before planning a big project around them.
What's free in Google Vids
| Feature | Personal Google account | Notes from Google |
|---|---|---|
| Basic editing and recording | Yes | Basic features work with your Google Account |
| Teleprompter, transcript trim, styled captions | Yes | Made available to all users in 2026 |
| AI credits | 50 each month | Reset at 12:00 AM PT on the first of the month |
| AI avatars | Preset avatars only | Personal accounts can't create custom avatars |
| AI video editing | May be restricted | Google notes some restrictions for personal accounts |
What 50 AI credits a month buys
Google's availability page lists the credit cost of each Gemini feature in Vids:
- Help me create: 5 credits per use.
- AI voiceover: 1 credit per voiceover.
- Image generation and editing: 1 credit per image action.
- Slides to Vids with AI voiceovers: 5 credits per use.
So 50 credits could cover ten uses of Help me create, or a mix of voiceovers and images across a few short videos. Google says the allowance can't be shared with other people and doesn't carry over to the next month.
The free features Google opened up in 2026
In February 2026, Google announced on its Workspace Updates blog that three Vids features were available to all users, regardless of Workspace edition: a read-along teleprompter that scrolls your script as you speak, transcript trim for editing by deleting words or silences from the transcript, and styled captions. These used to be mainly for paid Workspace users.
For anyone recording talking-head videos, the teleprompter and transcript trim are the two that save the most time.
How to make a video in Google Vids for free
- Sign in with your Google account and open Google Vids.
- Start from a template, a recording, or a Google Slides presentation, where Google says each slide becomes a scene and speaker notes become the script.
- Record your own video, audio or screen inside Vids.
- Use your free credits on a voiceover or Help me create if you need a starting draft.
- Share the finished video. Google says anyone with a Google account can view a video shared from Vids.
Google says videos made in Vids can be up to 30 minutes long, which is plenty for training and explainer content. If you mainly need to capture your screen, my guide to the best free screen recorders lists other options.
Who else gets 50 credits
Personal accounts aren't the only ones capped at 50. Google's availability page lists the same 50 credits a month for Google Workspace Individual accounts and for Google AI Plus accounts, with the same reset at midnight Pacific time and the same no-rollover rule. So if you upgrade only to Google AI Plus, don't expect a bigger Vids allowance.
For eligible business plans, Google lists different default limits, such as up to 25 AI avatar generations and up to 500 AI video clip seconds per month, and unlimited Slides to Vids with AI voiceovers. Some plans share a limit of 10 generations across AI avatars and AI video clips.
When a paid plan makes sense
Google's availability table lists Google AI Pro, Google AI Ultra and Workspace business editions as account types with their own Vids allowances, separate from the 50 personal credits, while personal accounts stay limited to preset avatars. If you make videos every week, check your exact plan in that table before you upgrade. Note that Google says Workspace Frontline doesn't include Gemini features in Vids at all.
If you're weighing up Google's wider AI tools, my page on whether Gemini is free explains what the free Gemini app includes, and my roundup of animated explainer video makers covers alternatives built for that style of video.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My verdict
Google Vids is free for basic video creation, and the 2026 additions of a teleprompter, transcript trim and captions make the free version useful for real business videos. The 50 monthly AI credits are a taster, not a production budget. Use them for voiceovers and first drafts, record the rest yourself, and upgrade only if you need custom avatars or AI clips every week.
