Is Adobe Sign Free? Free E-Signatures in Adobe Acrobat Explained

Partly. Adobe Acrobat Sign isn't free as a full product, but Adobe gives you free e-signature options. With a free Acrobat account you can complete two request e-signature transactions every 30 days on a rolling basis, you can sign PDFs yourself for free, and the people you send a document to can sign it in their browser with no account and no charge. Regular sending needs a paid Acrobat plan.

Adobe has folded its e-signature product into Acrobat, so most people searching for Adobe Sign today land on Acrobat's pages. For a freelancer or small business sending the odd contract, the free allowance can be enough. If you send proposals every week, it won't be.

Below I've set out exactly what Adobe's own pages say you can do for free, where the limits sit and what each paid Acrobat plan adds, checked in October 2026.

The two-transaction limit, explained

Adobe's request signature page says that with a free Acrobat account, you can complete two request e-signature transactions every 30 days on a rolling basis. Rolling means the window moves with you, not a calendar month. If you send one on the 5th and one on the 20th, the next free slot opens 30 days after the first one.

For a sole trader who signs a new client every few weeks, that's workable. For a business sending quotes, NDAs and onboarding forms, it'll run out fast. Keep a simple note of the date of each request so you know when your next free slot opens.

Free for the people who sign

This is the part that matters most for your clients. Adobe says anyone can sign a document sent through Acrobat in any browser, with no account required. Signers get a secure email link and are guided to where they need to sign. You never have to ask a client to create an Adobe account.

How to send a document for signature for free

  1. Go to Adobe's online request signature tool and sign in with a free Acrobat account.
  2. Upload the document you want signed.
  3. Add your signers and assign the fields each of them needs to complete.
  4. Preview the document, then click Send to email the signature request.
  5. Track responses as signers complete the document, and keep the signed copy in your account.

Adobe says files you upload to its online tools are deleted unless you sign in to save them, so stay signed in if you want a record. If you only need to sign something yourself, my guide on how to sign a PDF walks through the free options.

What the paid Acrobat plans add

Adobe's plan FAQ explains the split. Acrobat Standard lets you fill out forms, sign documents and request e-signatures. Acrobat Pro adds reusable e-sign templates, web forms and bulk sending so you can collect and track several signatures at once. Acrobat Studio includes everything in Pro, plus PDF Spaces, AI Assistant for Acrobat and Adobe Express Premium.

If you want to test the paid features first, Adobe offers an Acrobat Pro 7-day free trial. Its request signature page says the trial lets you use digital signatures, collect e-signatures with advanced authentication and create e-signing templates.

One thing to know about the desktop version

Adobe says it stopped selling perpetual versions of Acrobat after Acrobat 2020. Acrobat Pro 2024 is a one-time purchase that gives three years of access to the desktop software with quarterly security updates, but Adobe says it doesn't include access to Acrobat's online services in a browser or on mobile. If you want to send e-signature requests online, a subscription is the route.

Free Adobe tools that sit alongside e-signing

Adobe's plan page is clear that viewing is free for good: you can open and view PDFs with Acrobat Reader, free, always. Its online tools also let you add comments, fill in forms and sign PDFs for free, and Adobe says you can sign in to try more than 25 tools, such as converting or compressing a file.

There's a difference between an e-signature and a digital signature that's worth knowing for contracts. Adobe lists digital signatures and e-signatures with advanced authentication as Acrobat Pro features, not part of the free allowance. If a client or regulator asks for a certificate-based digital signature, the free route won't cover it.

Free alternatives worth comparing

My verdict

Adobe Sign is free for light use. Sign your own PDFs whenever you like, send up to two signature requests every rolling 30 days, and your clients will never pay to sign. Once you're sending contracts every week or need templates and bulk send, you'll need Acrobat Standard or Pro, so test it with the 7-day trial before you commit.
