The best account reconciliation software matches transactions, ties balance sheet accounts to their supporting evidence and tracks sign-offs automatically, so the month-end close no longer depends on spreadsheets: accounting firms want a view across client books, growing companies want close and reconciliation together, and banks need high-volume matching. Eleven tools follow in no particular order.
Reconciliations are the quiet backbone of the books. Every bank account, credit card, payroll clearing account and intercompany balance should tie to something real at the end of each month. When that work lives in spreadsheets and email, it's slow, fragile and hard to prove to an auditor.
Account reconciliation software takes on the matching and the paper trail. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If you're an accountancy practice, my piece on automating month-end bookkeeping covers the wider picture.

What reconciliation software automates
Transaction matching compares two sets of records, such as the bank feed and the ledger, and clears the items that agree. Balance sheet reconciliation checks each account's balance against supporting evidence. The software records who prepared and reviewed each one, and flags anything that doesn't tie.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Some tools focus on the month-end close for any business. Others are built for banks, payment firms and asset managers that reconcile millions of transactions a day.
Keep the evidence trail long enough
GOV.UK says a limited company must keep records for 6 years from the end of the last company financial year they relate to, or longer if, for example, they show a transaction that covers more than one of the company's accounting periods.
Your reconciliation tool quietly becomes part of that record. Check that sign-offs, attachments and history are kept for at least that long, and that you can export everything if you ever change systems.
If you are still choosing accounting software, see whether QuickBooks Desktop or Online suits you.
Questions to ask a reconciliation vendor
- Which accounting systems and banks do you connect to?
- How does transaction matching handle partial and many-to-one matches?
- Can preparers and reviewers sign off with a clear audit trail?
- How are unmatched items flagged and followed up?
- Can we attach evidence to each reconciliation?
- How long do you keep history, and can we export it?
Invoices that linger past their due date are the job of debt collection software.
Signs your close needs reconciliation software
- The close takes over a week. Most of it's ticking and matching.
- Auditors ask for the same evidence. Year after year.
- Old unmatched items linger. Nobody remembers why.
- One person holds the spreadsheet. Holidays become a risk.

My plain advice on choosing account reconciliation software
Start by listing every reconciliation you do each month and how long each takes. The bank and card reconciliations are rarely the problem; it's the clearing accounts, accruals and intercompany balances that eat the days, so make sure the tool handles those well.
Match the tool to your volume. A practice reviewing client books needs a different product from a payments company matching millions of lines. For keeping the underlying books in order, my tips for easier bookkeeping are a useful companion.
Frequently asked questions
What is account reconciliation software?
It's software that matches transactions and checks account balances against supporting records, with sign-offs and an audit trail.
What's the difference between bank reconciliation and account reconciliation?
Bank reconciliation checks the bank account against the ledger. Account reconciliation covers every balance sheet account, not just the bank.
How long should reconciliation records be kept?
In the UK, GOV.UK says company records should be kept for 6 years from the end of the last financial year they relate to, sometimes longer.
Can small businesses use reconciliation software?
Yes. Many accounting packages handle basic bank matching, and dedicated tools help once the month-end close involves many accounts.
Does reconciliation software replace accountants?
No. It takes on matching and tracking, leaving people to review exceptions and judge what's unusual.
What is transaction matching?
It's the automatic pairing of records from two sources, such as a bank feed and the ledger, so only the differences need human attention.
