Is YouTube Free? Watching, Uploading and What Premium Adds

Yes, YouTube is free. You can watch videos without paying, and you can upload videos to your own channel for free from a computer or phone. The free version shows ads. YouTube Premium is the paid membership that removes ads on most videos and adds offline downloads and background play.

It's a question people ask more than you'd think, usually after a pop-up offers them a Premium trial or a video stops when they switch apps. YouTube is free to use, both for watching and for publishing, and that's why it's such a strong channel for small businesses. What you pay for with Premium is convenience, not access. Here's the full picture.

What's free on YouTube

  • Watching videos, Shorts and live streams on any device, with ads
  • Subscribing to channels, commenting and saving playlists
  • Creating a channel and uploading videos from a computer or mobile device
  • Editing video details, such as titles and descriptions, in YouTube Studio

YouTube's upload help page walks you through it: click Create, then Upload videos, choose your file and add your details. YouTube converts your video to the highest resolution available for playback, and says that verifying your account helps with processing time.

What YouTube Premium adds

YouTube describes Premium as a paid membership that improves your experience on YouTube and its other apps. Its help page lists the main benefits:

FeatureFree YouTubeYouTube Premium
Watching videosYes, with adsWithout ads on millions of videos
Offline downloads on mobileNoYes
Background playNoYes
YouTube Music PremiumNoIncluded at no extra charge

YouTube Music Premium is also sold on its own for people who mainly want ad-free music, downloads and background listening in the YouTube Music app.

Where you'll still see ads with Premium

Premium doesn't remove every promotion. YouTube says Premium and Music Premium members may still see branding or promotions that creators build into their content, as well as promotional links and shelves if the creator turns them on. Ads or promotions may also appear on Primetime Channels and during live events streamed on YouTube, such as sports. Music Premium members may still hear ads on podcasts.

Who Premium is worth it for

Premium earns its place for people who watch a lot on their phone. If you listen to talks, tutorials or podcasts on YouTube while doing something else, background play alone can justify it, because on the free version playback stops when you leave the app. Downloads matter if you commute or travel and want to watch offline. If you mainly watch the odd video on a laptop, the free version with ads is usually fine, and you can skip the monthly bill.

For business owners who use YouTube for research, Premium also means fewer interruptions when you're watching a long training video or a webinar replay, which is a small but real gain in focus.

Ways to try Premium free

YouTube's help page says you can start a trial if you're eligible when you sign up. If you're not eligible, the button shows Get YouTube Premium instead. My guide to the YouTube Premium free trial explains who qualifies, and my page on YouTube Premium for students covers the student option.

If you only want fewer ads rather than the full set of extras, my explainer on YouTube Premium Lite covers the lighter plan and what it leaves out.

Free alternatives to Premium features

Some Premium benefits have free workarounds inside YouTube itself. You can save videos to a Watch later playlist and come back to them, and you can create playlists to group training videos for your team. On a computer, you can keep a video playing in one browser tab while you work in another. What you can't do for free is download videos for offline viewing in the app or keep audio playing in the background on your phone; YouTube lists both as Premium benefits.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Be wary of third-party apps and sites promising free YouTube downloads or ad-free viewing. They're not YouTube's own features, so stick to the official options. YouTube says Premium is available in many countries and regions, so check it's offered where you live before you plan around it.

How billing works if you do upgrade

YouTube says that from 2022, new Premium and Music Premium subscribers who signed up on Android are billed through Google Play, while existing subscribers weren't affected. You can see recent charges at payments.google.com. If you get Premium as part of another subscription, such as Pixel Pass, YouTube has separate help for managing it.

Free YouTube for business owners

For a small business, the free side of YouTube is the part that matters. You can publish tutorials, product demos, client stories and short clips without paying a thing, and your audience can watch them free. A few points from YouTube's upload guide are worth knowing:

  1. Video titles have a limit of 100 characters, so put the important words first.
  2. If you close the upload window before choosing visibility, YouTube saves the video as private.
  3. Higher qualities like 4K take longer to process, so upload in good time before you share a launch video.
  4. You can reuse details from a previous upload to save time on regular series.

My verdict

YouTube is free to watch and free to publish on, and that's not changing. Premium is worth it if ads, offline viewing or background play bother you every day, and it brings YouTube Music Premium with it. Try it on a trial if you're eligible, but for a business, the free channel is where the value is.
