YouTube live chat replay plays a finished live stream's chat alongside the recording, exactly as it appeared live. It's on by default for every stream. If it's missing, the creator turned it off, the stream was edited after it ended, or YouTube switched chat off for a rule break.
Watching a stream after it's finished is a different experience without the chat. The jokes, the questions and the moment everyone typed the same thing at once are half the fun. Live chat replay brings that back, and for creators it keeps a record of what your audience asked while you were live.
How to watch live chat replay
- Open the finished live stream on YouTube.
- Look for the chat panel next to the video on a computer, or below it on your phone.
- Press play. The messages appear in time with the video, as they did live.
- Choose Top chat for a filtered view with likely spam removed, or Live chat to see every message.
Because the replay is tied to the video's timeline, skipping ahead moves the chat with you. It's a quick way to find the moment a big announcement landed: jump to that point and the reactions are right there, timed to the second.
Why live chat replay isn't showing
| Reason | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| The creator turned it off | Replay is on by default but can be switched off for each stream |
| The stream was edited | Streams edited in the video editor won't have chat replay, whatever kind of edit was made |
| Chat was switched off for a rule break | YouTube may turn off live chat if the stream or chat broke its Community Guidelines |
| The stream was made for kids | Live chat is off for streams with a made-for-kids audience, so there's nothing to replay |
The editing rule surprises creators most. Trim the start of your stream to cut the dead air, and the chat replay is gone for good. If the chat matters to you, leave the archive untouched and upload a separate edited version instead.
Top chat vs Live chat in a replay
The same two views you get during a stream are there in the replay. YouTube says Top chat filters messages such as potential spam to make the chat easier to read, based on signals like the message text, the commenter's name and avatar, and the channel's moderation settings. Live chat isn't filtered and shows every message as it came in.
Top chat is the better choice for catching up on a long stream, because the noise is stripped out. Switch to Live chat if you're looking for a specific message and can't find it, since Top chat may have hidden it. Creators reviewing their own stream should look at the unfiltered view at least once, because that's where repeated spam and problem accounts show up.
What doesn't appear in a chat replay
- Live polls. YouTube says they don't show up in chat replays, so the results only exist for people who watched live.
If you ran a poll that you want people to see later, mention the result out loud on the stream or add it to the video description, so viewers watching the replay later still get the answer.
For creators: how to turn chat replay off or on
- Go to your videos at youtube.com/my_videos, or open YouTube Studio's content list.
- Click the Live tab.
- Select the stream.
- Open the Customization tab.
- Untick Live chat replay to turn it off, or tick it to switch it back on.
Why turn it off? If a chat got heated, if someone posted personal details, or if the replay distracts from a tutorial you want people to follow, hiding it keeps the recording clean. Otherwise I'd leave it on. A lively replay shows new viewers that real people turn up to your streams, which is a good reason to come to the next one.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Go to your YouTube History.
- On the right of the page, choose Live chat.
- Scroll to the message. To delete it, hover over it and click the X.
That's useful if you said something in the heat of the moment, or shared a link or detail you'd rather not leave in a public replay. For your other comments, see my guide on how to see your YouTube comments.
Live chat replay and growing your channel
For creators, the replay is a free research tool. Scroll back through the chat after each stream and note the questions that came up more than once. Those are your next videos. It's also worth pinning your best answers in the description so viewers watching later find them without scrolling through hundreds of messages. If you stream regularly, my YouTube marketing strategy guide covers how to turn streams into a steady stream of video ideas.
My verdict
Live chat replay is on by default and worth keeping for most streams. If it's missing on a video, check whether the stream was edited, because that removes the replay permanently. Creators who care about the chat should save edits for a separate upload and leave the original archive untouched.
