To move money from PayPal to GCash, link a verified Philippine PayPal account to a Fully Verified GCash account, convert your PayPal balance to PHP, then in GCash tap Cash In, Global Banks and Partners, PayPal and enter the amount. GCash says it's real-time but can take 24 to 48 hours.
For Filipino freelancers and creators paid through PayPal, GCash is the quickest way to get that money into something you can spend. The transfer is a cash in started from the GCash app, not a withdrawal from PayPal, and that detail explains most of the confusion.
Before you start: the four conditions
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| GCash account is Fully Verified | Linking is blocked on lower verification levels |
| PayPal account is PH-based and verified | A PayPal account set to another country won't link |
| PayPal balance converted to PHP | GCash pulls pesos; if PHP isn't in your PayPal currencies, add it on the PayPal site |
| One PayPal per GCash | You can link only 1 PayPal to 1 GCash, and the other way round |
On Android there's a fifth, oddly specific rule: install Google Chrome and set it as your default browser, because the PayPal login opens in it.
Linking PayPal to GCash
- Open the GCash app and tap Cash In.
- Tap Global Banks and Partners, then PayPal.
- Log in to PayPal and tap Next.
- Tap Okay to confirm the link.
Moving the money
- In PayPal, convert the balance you want to move into PHP.
- In GCash, tap Cash In, then Global Banks and Partners, then PayPal.
- Type the amount, tap Next and confirm.
- Watch your GCash App Inbox for the confirmation message.
GCash describes it as real-time but warns it may take 24 to 48 hours. If it's been longer, use the Did not receive money? help article in the GCash Help Center before you try again, so you don't send a duplicate.
A bonus most people don't know about
GCash says linking and cashing in with PayPal may raise your GCash wallet limit to PHP 500,000. If you're a freelancer receiving larger client payments, that's worth having, because hitting the wallet limit is one of the main reasons a big cash in gets stuck.
What about GCash to PayPal?
This is the search people make next, and the honest answer is that GCash doesn't offer it as a transfer. GCash's own note says transfers to and from your GCash VISA Card and PayPal are not available. The PayPal link in GCash is built for money coming in. If you need to pay someone through PayPal, use a bank card or bank account linked to PayPal directly.
When it doesn't work
- The link fails: check both accounts are verified, the PayPal account is set to the Philippines, and the names match.
- PHP isn't offered: add PHP as a currency in PayPal on the website, then convert.
- The amount is rejected: check your GCash wallet limits in the app.
- Android login loops: set Chrome as the default browser and try again.
- You want to change the linked PayPal: remember it's one to one, so unlink first.
Fees and exchange rates are shown on the screens before you confirm, so read them each time; PayPal's conversion rate isn't always the one you'd get elsewhere. I've written about whether to rely on PayPal's conversion rate if you move larger sums.
Getting paid by clients so the transfer is smooth
A lot of PayPal to GCash trouble starts before the money reaches you. A few habits help. Ask clients to pay you in a currency you can convert cleanly, and remember the conversion to PHP happens inside PayPal before GCash pulls it. Keep your PayPal name identical to your GCash name, since mismatches are a common reason links fail verification. And don't wait until you need the money urgently to set up the link for the first time; do it on a quiet day, test with a small amount, and check it arrives before you rely on it for rent.
Is it safe?
The link itself is the official route inside the GCash app, and GCash's operator, G-Xchange, Inc., is regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The risk is around it, not in it. Never give anyone your GCash MPIN or a one-time code to help you transfer from PayPal, and ignore messages offering faster or cheaper PayPal to GCash conversions through an agent. You don't need a middleman for this; the app does it.
Other routes GCash supports
The same Global Banks and Partners section lets you link Payoneer, cash in through Payoneer, or cash in from a US, EU or UK bank. If a client pays you through one of those, you may get a better rate than routing everything through PayPal first.

My verdict
Get both accounts fully verified first, convert to PHP inside PayPal, and use the Cash In path in GCash. Don't count on sending money the other way. If you're still building your client base, these online jobs in the Philippines are a good starting point.
