The standard PS5 suits most players: it plays the same PS5 games, runs over 8,500 PS4 games and comes as a disc or Digital Edition console. The PS5 Pro suits people with a 4K TV, ideally one with 120Hz support, who want sharper and smoother versions of big games through AI upscaling called PSSR, stronger ray tracing and a 2TB drive. On an older or smaller TV the extra power has much less to show, so the regular PS5 is the easier pick.
This isn't a choice between two game libraries. Both consoles play PS5 games and over 8,500 PS4 games, so the real question is what your television can show and how much you notice frame rates. I read Sony's PS5 page and its PS5 Pro pages for the US and the UK, including the comments Sony gathered from the studios behind the games.

What PSSR does for your television
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as AI-enhanced resolution that gives super sharp image clarity on a 4K TV, and the Pro can run it alongside ray tracing at 60 or up to 120 frames per second in compatible games. There's also an Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting that steadies the picture in games built for the first version of PSSR, with Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds on Sony's list.
The developer notes on Sony's page are the most useful part, because they show what changes in games you'd recognise. Naughty Dog says The Last of Us Part II Remastered renders at 1440p and upscales to 4K while holding its 60 fps target. Guerrilla says Horizon Forbidden West now matches or surpasses the regular PS5's Quality mode at 60 FPS, which is double the frame rate. A programmer at Polyphony says ray tracing now works during races, something that wasn't possible before.
The disc question on both consoles
Sony's PS5 page carries a notice that affects both machines: from the start of 2028, newly released PlayStation games will come out in digital format only, while discs for older games keep working. If you want to play discs on a Digital Edition, Sony offers a removable disc drive as an accessory, and its page says that drive is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the slim CFI-2000 group and needs an internet connection to pair the first time.
Sony's Pro page doesn't mention a disc drive at all, so if you've got a shelf of PS4 and PS5 discs, check what's in the box before you decide.
Where the standard PS5 is enough
The regular PS5 already has the ultra-high speed SSD for near-instant loading, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio. Game Boost gives smoother frame rates in select PS4 games on both consoles, so an old collection feels better either way. If your TV is 1080p, or you mostly play indie games and older favourites, the Pro's headline features have little to work with.
Which player each console is for
The PS5 suits families, casual players and anyone happy with great-looking games at standard settings. The PS5 Pro suits players with a big 4K TV who replay story games, people who notice the jump to 60 or 120 frames, and anyone who wants 2TB so they're not deleting games to make room. If the move to digital games makes you think about ownership, my piece on why some players prefer DRM-free games is worth a read, and if you love talking about what you play, here's how to start a gaming blog.
My advice on PS5 or PS5 Pro
Look at your television before you look at the consoles. If it's a 4K set with 120Hz support and you play the big PlayStation releases, the Pro is the one that'll show you the difference Sony's studios describe. If not, get the standard PS5, keep the 2028 move to digital in mind, and you won't feel you're missing out.
