Java Edition suits PC players who want mods, custom skins and the huge world of community servers, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock Edition suits families and anyone who plays across consoles, phones, tablets and Chromebooks, because it cross-plays with every other Bedrock device and runs smoothly on modest hardware. If you're on a PC, you don't have to choose: Minecraft for PC now includes both editions.
This used to be a real dilemma, but Mojang has made it simpler for PC players: its store page says the PC game now includes both Java and Bedrock Edition. So the question is which one you open, and which one your friends are playing. I read Minecraft's Java and Bedrock comparison on its official store page and Mojang's App Store listing.
Java and Bedrock compared
| Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | |

| Hardware | Needs a stronger computer | Runs smoothly on modest devices |
| Split screen | Not included | Up to four players, consoles only |
| Controls | No controller or touch support listed | Controller or touch support |
Why modders and server fans pick Java
Mojang's page sums up Minecraft Java Edition as best for mods: you can download community-made mods that change how the game plays, and use any skin you find online or make yourself. Mojang also lists countless online servers and communities with all kinds of variations and mods as a Java strength.
The catch is in the same list. Mojang says Java is resource intensive and needs higher computer specifications to run smoothly, and Java players can only play with other Java players. It's a PC-only edition, but it does run on Mac and Linux as well as Windows.
Why families and console players pick Bedrock
Minecraft Bedrock Edition is the one on Xbox, Switch, PS5, phones, tablets and Chromebooks, and its big strength is cross-play: a child on a tablet can join a parent on a laptop and a cousin on a console. Mojang says Bedrock runs well without powerful hardware and often runs more smoothly than Java.
For parents, the most useful line on the page is that Bedrock is connected to Xbox's services, so the online experience is moderated and parental controls can be fine-tuned. Mojang's App Store listing adds Realms and Realms Plus, a private server Mojang hosts where you can play with up to 10 friends across devices, with a free 30-day Realms trial in the app.
Two details that catch people out
Split-screen play, where up to four people share one screen, is only on consoles, so it's a Bedrock feature you won't get on a PC. And Bedrock's add-ons, skin packs and worlds come from Minecraft's own in-game store, while Java's mods come from the community, which shapes how each edition feels once you've played for a while.
The game itself is the same at heart. Mojang's App Store listing describes Creative mode with unlimited resources, Survival mode where you gather, craft and fend off danger through the night, and an endless, randomly generated world of biomes and mobs. On Bedrock you can also join free multiplayer servers with thousands of other players, and use slash commands to change the weather, summon mobs or set the time of day.
Who each edition suits
Java suits teenagers and adults on a decent PC or Mac who want mods, custom servers and the long-running community. Bedrock suits families, younger players, anyone on a console, phone or Chromebook, and groups of friends on mixed devices. My advice on Java or Bedrock
Ask your child, or your friends, which edition their worlds are in, because cross-play decides more than features do. If everyone's on consoles and tablets, play Bedrock. If you're on a PC and want mods, open Java, and since the PC game includes both, you can still hop into Bedrock when the family wants to play together.
