Chromebook vs MacBook: Which Laptop Suits How You Work?

A Chromebook suits people who live in Google's apps, such as Gmail, Docs, Drive and Meet, and want a simple laptop with Gemini built in, from many makers. A MacBook suits people who want Apple's apps, long battery life, an iPhone that works with their laptop and the option to run heavier creative software. If your day is browser tabs and Google Docs, a Chromebook does the job; if you edit photos or video, or own an iPhone, a MacBook is the stronger fit.

Both sides have moved recently. Google's Chromebook page now leads with Googlebook, which it calls the first laptop designed for Gemini Intelligence, and Apple has added MacBook Neo, a 13-inch MacBook with Apple's A18 Pro chip. I read Google's Chromebook pages and Apple's Mac, MacBook Air and MacBook Neo pages.

What Google is building into Chromebooks

Google's page centres on Gemini. The launcher puts Gmail, Drive, Docs, Photos and Meet one tap away, and the range includes Chromebook Plus models alongside standard Chromebooks. Choice is part of the appeal: Google's shop page lists models from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Samsung, including the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Google's Chromebook site also has whole sections on gaming, accessibility and Chromebooks for education.

There's also a pointed message for Windows users. Google notes that Windows 10 no longer receives support updates, and it invites people to see why others are switching from PC to Chromebook. If you're sitting on an old Windows 10 laptop, that's the real decision you're facing.

What Apple puts into a MacBook

Apple's MacBook Neo has a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, the A18 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence, up to 16 hours of battery, two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, and Apple lists free software updates and built-in antivirus protection. MacBook Air steps up to the M5 chip, up to 18 hours of battery, a silent fanless design, and a charge to 50 percent in about 30 minutes. MacBook Neo comes in silver, blush, citrus and indigo, if colour matters to you.

The iPhone link is easy to overlook. Apple says you can answer calls and texts on the laptop, use iPhone Mirroring to control your phone from the Mac, and share files across devices with Universal Clipboard.

Battery is model by model on Chromebooks. Google's shop page quotes up to 10 hours for the Acer Chromebook 315 and adds that real battery life varies by configuration, apps and settings, so compare the exact model you're looking at. Apple gives one number per MacBook, which makes the Mac side easier to weigh up.

Where each one falls short

A Chromebook works best when your work lives in Google's apps and the browser, so check that any specialist software you rely on runs there before you choose. A MacBook asks you to stay within Apple's choices: one maker, Apple's own chips and fewer models to pick from.

Who each laptop suits

A Chromebook suits students, families sharing one laptop, and small teams that run on Google Workspace. A MacBook suits creators, iPhone owners and anyone who values Apple's free software updates. If you go Mac, here's my guide to setting up a Mac for digital marketing, and if a Chromebook is for the kids, these offline farming games for Chromebook work without Wi-Fi.

My advice on Chromebook or MacBook

List the five things you do most on a laptop. If they're all in a browser or Google's apps, a Chromebook will feel quick and simple, and you'll have plenty of makers to choose from. If photo editing, video, or an iPhone is on that list, a MacBook Neo or Air will serve you better.
