Hinge vs Bumble: Which Dating App Suits What You Want?

Hinge suits people looking for a relationship who want profiles full of prompts and a gentle push towards meeting in person. Bumble suits people who want a women-first app with strong safety tools, plus BFF for making friends. If you're tired of endless swiping, try Hinge; if feeling safe and in control comes first, try Bumble.

Both apps say they want you off the app and on a real date, but they go about it differently, and Hinge has a surprisingly specific rule about how many likes you get each day. I read Hinge's mission page, Bumble's site and both App Store listings.

Why Hinge limits you to eight likes

Hinge's mission page explains a decision you'd never guess from the app. It says research showed that eight is the magic number: when members had more free likes per day, their matches were worse. So everyone now gets eight. The point is to make each like count, and Hinge backs that up by making you like or comment on a specific photo or prompt rather than a whole profile.

Hinge also says you're eight times more likely to have a great date with your Most Compatible suggestions, and it shows you who has liked you rather than hiding likes. After you swap numbers with a match, the app asks how the date went, so it can make better suggestions next time. Profiles can carry video and voice as well as photos and prompts, which gives you more to go on before you say yes to a drink.

How Bumble puts safety first

Bumble's listing leads with safety. You can get ID Verified early on, use Share Date to send your date's details to your group chat, and block, report or unmatch from inside the chat. There's built-in guidance to keep conversations kind, plus video calls so you can check someone out before you meet.

Two features stand out for busy people. Snooze Mode lets you take a break from dating without losing your matches, and a newer tab gathers people who spent more time on your profile or sent you a SuperSwipe or a Note. Bumble also runs BFF, for meeting friends after a move to a new city.

If Tinder is also on your shortlist, our Bumble vs Tinder guide is worth a look.

What upgrading changes

Both apps are free, with optional tiers on top. On Hinge, Hinge+ lets you see everyone who likes you and send unlimited likes, and HingeX adds enhanced recommendations and priority likes. On Bumble, Boost, Premium and Premium+ add advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode for dating somewhere you're about to visit. Neither upgrade is needed to match and chat, so use the free version for a few weeks first and only upgrade if one feature, like Travel Mode before a trip, would help.

Hinge against Tinder gets its own comparison in our Hinge vs Tinder guide.

Who each app suits

Hinge suits people who want something serious and who'd rather send fewer, more thoughtful likes. Bumble suits women who want more control over their dating and anyone for whom safety tools come first, as well as people who'd like to make friends through the same app. Whichever you pick, it's worth knowing what ghosting means in dating and how to spot it, and these self-love journal prompts help you go in feeling good about yourself.

My advice on Hinge or Bumble

Fill in your profile in full on whichever app you choose, because both of them match on what you write. On Hinge, use your eight likes on people whose prompts you can reply to with something specific. On Bumble, get ID Verified and set up Share Date before your first meeting. If one app feels quiet after a month in your area, switch to the other rather than upgrading.

Do you make dating or social apps? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
