Yes, Roblox is free. Roblox's help centre says it's free to play, and you can download it for free on Xbox, PlayStation, computers and phones. What isn't free is Robux, Roblox's virtual currency, which you use for avatar items and extras inside experiences, and Roblox Plus, its optional membership.
2026 brought a big change that a lot of older guides miss. Roblox Premium stopped being open to new members on 30 April 2026 and Roblox Plus replaced it. Here's what's free, what isn't, and what changed.
What you can do on Roblox for free
- Download Roblox on PC, Mac, phones, tablets, Xbox and PlayStation.
- Play the experiences on Roblox, including with friends across devices. Roblox says Xbox players can play cross-platform with friends on PC, Mac and mobile.
- Customise your avatar with the items you already have.
- Build your own experiences with Roblox's creator tools.
You don't need a membership to play. Everything else on this page is optional.
What needs Robux
Roblox says Robux are its virtual currency, and there are two ways to get them: you get them from Roblox, or you get them as a creator by building experiences or making avatar items. Inside experiences, creators can offer extras for Robux, and Roblox says you get extra Robux in each bundle when you get them on the web, on computers or with gift cards, a bonus it plans to keep in place.
There's no such thing as free Robux. Roblox is blunt about this: it says any offer of free Robux, memberships or valuable items is a scam meant to take your account. If a website, video or game promises a Robux generator, Roblox says to report it.
Roblox Plus replaced Roblox Premium
This is the change to know about in 2026:
| Roblox Premium | Roblox Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Open to new members? | No, Roblox stopped offering it on 30 April 2026 | Yes, launched globally on 30 April 2026 |
| Monthly Robux included? | Yes, existing members keep their stipend | No, it's benefits only, with optional bundles that add Robux |
| Trading and reselling | Kept for existing members | Unlimited trading and reselling |
| If you cancel | Roblox says you can't sign up again | No such limit in Roblox's Plus help article |
Roblox says existing Premium members can keep their membership, but if they cancel, the option to come back is gone. So if you're on Premium, think twice before cancelling.
What Roblox Plus includes
Roblox's help article lists these Plus benefits:
- Savings on in-game items and avatars, which grow from your third month in a row.
- One free private server per game, so you choose who plays with you.
- Sending Robux to other users without platform deductions. Roblox says everyone involved must be age-verified and 18+, and under-18s need a parent or caregiver to approve.
- Unlimited trading and reselling of Limited items.
- The ability to publish and keep avatar items listed for others.
Roblox also says US users can make up to 2 free trades a month without Plus for a limited time.
Free Roblox for kids: what parents should set up
Because Roblox is free to start, most parents first think about it when a child asks for Robux. Roblox's Parental Controls let you manage daily screen time, on-platform friends and your child's Robux balance. You can link your own Roblox account to your child's, or use Parent mode on your child's device without an account of your own. A linked parent account also gets emails about your child's activity, such as notifications when Robux are used.
- Create your own Roblox account, or use Parent mode on your child's device.
- Link your account to your child's in Settings, then Parental Controls.
- Set screen time limits and who they can add as friends.
- Turn on notifications so you see when Robux are used.
- Talk to your child about free Robux scams, using Roblox's own warning.
Creating on Roblox is separate
Roblox also rewards creators with Robux. Its help page says you can make avatar items for others or build an experience, and the Developer Exchange programme lets eligible creators exchange the Robux they've made for real currency. That's for creators, though, not players, and it doesn't change the fact that playing is free.
Private servers on Plus
Roblox says Plus members get one free private server per game across supported games. A private server is your own copy of a game, so you control who joins. Roblox also says private servers set up separately outside Plus aren't affected and keep running on their original terms.

Is free Roblox enough?
For most players, yes. Free Roblox gives you the whole platform to play and build on, and plenty of experiences never ask for anything. Robux and Plus are extras. If you're playing on the go, my guide on whether you can play Roblox offline is worth a look, and here's how to get voice chat on Roblox.
My verdict: Roblox is free to download and play, and you don't need Plus to enjoy it. Set up Parental Controls before a child plays, ignore every free Robux offer, and if you're an existing Premium member, keep in mind you can't rejoin once you leave.
