Vimeo vs YouTube: Where Should Your Videos Live?

YouTube suits creators and businesses who want to be discovered, with recommendations, a huge audience and tools like YouTube Studio. Vimeo suits people who want to host and share videos on their own terms: ad-free, with a customisable player, privacy controls and password protection. Use YouTube to be found and Vimeo to present your work cleanly on your own site.

These two look similar until you ask what each is for. YouTube's mission is to give everyone a voice and show them the world. Vimeo describes itself as an all-in-one video platform for hosting, managing and sharing. I read Vimeo's home page and YouTube's About and How YouTube Works pages.

What Vimeo is built for

Vimeo's home page leads with hosting and the player: ad-free, HD hosting and a player you can customise completely. It adds privacy controls, password protection, a video library, review tools for collecting feedback, webinars and live streaming, plus Vimeo AI for editing and translating audio and captions.

There's a newer change worth knowing. Vimeo's page now says anyone can share unlimited public videos on Vimeo for free. It also lists a Premiere Pro integration and Vimeo Streaming, which lets you build your own streaming service.

What YouTube is built for

YouTube's About page puts it simply: its mission is to give everyone a voice and show them the world. Its How YouTube Works site explains the machinery behind that, from recommendations and the creator economy to Channel Memberships and labels on content when creators say they've used AI tools.

YouTube also says billions of people use it to learn every day. The family of products is wide: YouTube Studio for managing your channel, YouTube Music, YouTube Podcasts and YouTube Kids.

That AI labelling is worth noting if you make videos with AI tools. YouTube's How YouTube Works site says it's been labelling content when creators disclose AI use, because viewers have said they value transparency. Vimeo, for its part, offers Vimeo AI for smart editing and translation, so the two are using AI in quite different ways.

Hosting versus being found

This is the real split. On YouTube, your video sits inside a huge platform, where recommendations can bring you viewers you'd never reach alone, and your video sits alongside everyone else's. On Vimeo, your video is presented the way you choose, ad-free and inside your own player, but discovery isn't what the platform sells.

So a lot of businesses use both: YouTube for videos meant to attract new people, and Vimeo for videos embedded on a website, sent to clients or kept behind a password. Vimeo's review tools also make it easier to collect client feedback on a draft before anything goes public.

Who each platform suits

YouTube suits creators, coaches and brands who want search and recommendation traffic and want to build a channel. Vimeo suits filmmakers, agencies, course creators and teams who share client work, training videos or webinars and want control over how they look. My advice on Vimeo or YouTube

Put the videos you want strangers to find on YouTube, with clear titles and descriptions. Put the videos you want to control, like client previews, course lessons and anything on your sales pages, on Vimeo, where there are no adverts and you can add a password. Vimeo now lets you share public videos for free, so testing it takes no more than an afternoon.

Do you make video platforms or tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
