CapCut vs iMovie: Which Free Video Editor Suits You?

CapCut suits social media creators who want AI tools, auto captions and templates on desktop, browser, tablet and phone. iMovie suits Apple users who want a simple, free editor from Apple for family videos, trailers and quick projects on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Making Reels and TikToks? Start with CapCut. Making a polished home movie on Apple gear? Start with iMovie.

CapCut and iMovie are both free to start, but they're aimed at different jobs. CapCut's site is all about AI and trending social content, while Apple's App Store listings for iMovie focus on making movies with a few taps.

What CapCut gives you

CapCut calls itself an AI-powered photo and video editor for everyone, built for creating trending content for YouTube, Instagram and beyond. It comes in four versions: CapCut Desktop, CapCut Online, CapCut Pad and CapCut Mobile, so you can start on a phone and finish on a laptop.

The toolkit is broad. CapCut lists auto captions and caption templates, text to speech with natural-sounding and custom voices, noise reduction, background removal for images and video, and an AI video generator. Its Video Studio builds a video from a quick chat, choosing style and even an avatar.

What iMovie gives you

Apple's App Store listing for iPhone and iPad says iMovie lets you create Hollywood-style trailers and beautiful movies with intuitive Multi-Touch gestures. Magic Movies builds a custom video for you in a few taps. On the Mac, the separate iMovie app is listed as only for Mac, and both listings show iMovie as free.

Apple's support pages cover the practical side: you can keep your iMovie library on an external drive to free up space on your Mac, a wide range of cameras work with it, and there are user guides for Mac, iPhone and iPad.

The iMovie listing also mentions trailers you can watch before opening them, a redesigned audio browser for finding music, and support for multitasking on iPad. It's a tidy, focused app rather than a toolbox, which is exactly why so many beginners on Apple devices start there.

Social clips or finished films

The quickest way to choose is to look at what each maker shows off. CapCut's page is about captions, templates and AI for social posts. Apple's iMovie listings are about trailers and movies. If your video lives on TikTok, Reels or Shorts, CapCut's captions and templates save you time on every post. If you're cutting a family holiday or a short promo on a Mac, iMovie keeps things simple and stays inside Apple's world.

Platform matters too. iMovie only runs on Apple devices, while CapCut has a browser version that works on almost any computer. CapCut's menu even lists a CapCut x Codex plugin, which tells you how far it's leaning into AI workflows.

Who each editor suits

CapCut suits creators, coaches and small businesses who post short videos every week and want captions, voices and templates done fast. iMovie suits Apple users who want a straightforward free editor for longer videos, school projects and family films. If you're going with CapCut, here's how to add captions in CapCut, and if you'd rather stay on your phone, this covers editing a video on an iPhone.

My advice on CapCut or iMovie

Pick by where the video will be watched. For social media, open CapCut, try auto captions on one clip and see how much time it saves you. For anything you'd watch on a TV or send to family, iMovie on your iPhone or Mac is free, already made by Apple, and easy to learn in an afternoon. Plenty of creators keep both.

Do you make video editing apps? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
