To search messages on WhatsApp, tap the search bar at the top of the Chats tab and type a word or phrase to search every chat. To search one conversation, open it, tap the menu, then Search. You can also jump to a date inside a chat, or filter by photos, links and documents.
Somewhere in your WhatsApp is the address, the booking code or the link someone sent three weeks ago. Scrolling won't find it. WhatsApp's search will, and it does more than most people realise: it can search every chat at once, jump to a specific date, and filter results to just photos, links or documents.
How to search all your WhatsApp chats
- Open the Chats tab.
- Tap the search bar at the top.
- Type the word or phrase you're looking for.
- Tap a result to open that message in its chat.
Results show matching chats, contacts and messages, so typing a name finds both the person and anything they've written that matches.
How to search inside one chat
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the menu (three dots), then Search.
- Type the word or phrase and use the arrows to move between matches.
This is the quickest way to find something in a busy group, because it ignores every other conversation. It also works in one-to-one chats where you've swapped hundreds of messages with the same person.
How to search WhatsApp by date
This is the hidden gem. If you know roughly when something was said but not the words, jump straight to that day:
- Open the chat.
- Tap the menu, then Search.
- Tap the calendar icon.
- Pick the date and tap OK.
WhatsApp takes you to that point in the conversation, which beats scrolling back through months of messages.
Search by type: photos, links, documents and more
From the Chats tab, tap the search bar and use the filters that appear to narrow results. WhatsApp says filters cover photos, videos, links, GIFs, audio, polls and documents. One catch: filters only work from the Chats tab, not from inside a single chat.
| You're looking for | Best way to find it |
|---|---|
| A word or phrase in any chat | Search bar on the Chats tab |
| Something in one busy group | Menu, then Search, inside that chat |
| What was said on a certain day | Search by date with the calendar icon |
| A photo, link or PDF | Chats tab search with a media filter |
| Something you'll need again | Star it so it's in your Starred list |
Searching on WhatsApp Web and desktop
On a computer, click the search icon above your chats list to search everything, or open a chat and click its search icon to search just that conversation. Type your word or phrase and click a result to jump to it. A full keyboard makes long searches much easier.
Why search isn't finding your message
- The message was deleted, by you or by the sender for everyone.
- It's in a disappearing messages chat and has expired.
- The chat was cleared or you set up WhatsApp again without restoring a backup.
- You're searching the wrong account if you use more than one.
- The words don't match. Try a shorter, distinctive word rather than a whole sentence.
- It was a voice note or image. Search finds text, so look by date or media type instead.
Search tips that save time
- Use an unusual word. Searching for "the" or "meeting" brings up hundreds of results. A surname, a postcode or a product name finds the message straight away.
- Search for the sender's name first. If you remember who sent it, open their chat and search inside it rather than across everything.
- Combine date and keyword. Jump to the right week with the calendar, then scroll a little, rather than searching a vague word across years of history.
- Look for links by filter. Web addresses are hard to remember, so filter by links and scan the list instead.
These small habits turn search from a frustrating guessing game into a few seconds' work, especially in long-running groups where the same words come up every day.
Make next time easier
If you find yourself searching for the same kind of thing again and again, start starring important messages when they arrive. Starred messages are WhatsApp's bookmarks and live in one list you can open from the menu above your chats. Combined with search by date, you'll rarely need to scroll again. If an older chat seems to be missing completely, check the date of your last backup in Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup. Also read whether WhatsApp tells people about screenshots if you save messages that way, and how to find someone on WhatsApp helps if it's the person, not the message, you've lost.

My verdict
Use the Chats tab search for anything across all chats, the in-chat search for busy groups, and the calendar to jump to a date. Filters for photos, links and documents only work from the Chats tab, so start there when you're hunting for a file.
