WhatsApp Chat Themes: How to Change Them (Even Per Chat)

WhatsApp used to let you change the wallpaper and not much else. Chat themes go further: one tap changes the background and the colour of your message bubbles together, and you can give different chats different looks. It's a small thing that makes a busy phone easier to read, especially when your family group and your work chats look identical. Here's how to set a theme for every chat, how to give one conversation its own look, and how to fix it when the option won't show.

How to change the theme for all chats

If none of the pre-set themes suit you, mix and match. WhatsApp says you can choose between 20 different colours for the bubbles and pair them with any wallpaper.

Create your own theme with AI

In some countries, WhatsApp can create a theme from a description using Meta AI. Go to Settings, Appearance, Default chat theme and tap Create with AI. You can describe an image, edit one of your own photos, or start from a suggestion, then tweak the result. WhatsApp says the images are generated by a service from Meta based on what you type.

There are limits. Meta AI is only available in some countries, and even where it's launched it may not have reached your account yet. WhatsApp lists the supported languages as English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese.

How to change just the bubble colour or wallpaper

Sometimes you like your wallpaper and only want different bubbles, or the other way round. Both live in the same menu:

1. Go to Settings, then Appearance, then Default chat theme.
2. Tap Chat color to change only your message bubbles, then tap Set chat bubble.
3. Or tap Wallpaper to change only the background, then tap Set wallpaper.

Changing one doesn't reset the other, so you can build your own combination step by step. If you've chosen a full theme and then tweak the bubble colour, you're simply customising that theme.

Themes and dark mode

Themes and dark mode are separate settings that work together. Dark mode switches WhatsApp's whole colour scheme from light to dark, while your theme decides the wallpaper and bubble colours inside chats. If a theme looks too bright at night, switch on dark mode rather than hunting for a darker theme, and see whether the combination suits you. Some bright themes look very different once dark mode is on, so preview both before you settle.

Can other people see my chat theme?

Your theme changes how WhatsApp looks on your own phone. It isn't a setting you're applying to the other person's app, so they'll keep seeing their own chosen look. It's personal decoration, not a message.
