YouTube TV Not Working on Roku? Google's Roku Fixes

If YouTube TV isn't working on your Roku, check your model is supported, then restart the Roku and the app. For an HDCP error, turn on HDMI Ultra HD Color on your TV, and for choppy video switch Roku's Display type away from HDR.

YouTube TV on Roku has its own set of quirks, and Google's help pages list a couple of Roku-specific fixes that most troubleshooting guides miss. Before you reinstall anything, work out which kind of problem you've got: an error message, choppy playback, missing local channels or an app that won't open at all. Each has a different fix, and doing them in the wrong order wastes an evening. I'd always start with the quickest test, which is whether YouTube TV works on any other screen in the house.

Quick fixes in the right order

  1. Check whether YouTube TV works on your phone. If it doesn't, the problem is your account or the service, not the Roku.
  2. Restart the Roku from its settings menu, or unplug it from the power for a minute.
  3. Check for a Roku system update in Settings, then System.
  4. Remove the YouTube TV channel from your Roku, restart, and add it again from the Roku channel store.
  5. Unplug your router for a minute and test your connection with another streaming app.

If that doesn't sort it, match your symptom to the fixes below. Each one comes from Google's own YouTube TV help pages.

Is your Roku supported?

Every Roku TV is supported, but not every Roku player. Google's list includes the Roku Ultra, Ultra LT, Streaming Stick+, Streaming Stick (3600x and newer models), Express, Express+, Premiere, Premiere+, Roku 4, Roku Smart Soundbar and a few older models: the Roku 3 (4200x, 4230x) and Roku 2 (4210x). If your box isn't on that list, no amount of troubleshooting will help.

There's also a catch for older players. Google says devices with 512mb or less of memory may have a slightly different experience and some features may not be available. If an older Roku keeps freezing or missing features, that's likely the limit you're hitting.

YouTube TV HDCP error on Roku

An HDCP error is a copy-protection handshake between your Roku and your TV failing. Google's fix is specific: turn on the HDMI Ultra HD Color setting on your TV. The name of the setting varies by TV brand, and it's usually found in the TV's picture or external device settings. While you're there, plug the Roku straight into the TV rather than through a soundbar or splitter, and try a different HDMI port.

Choppy or stuttering video on Roku

This one surprises people. Google says choppy YouTube TV playback on a Roku player can be fixed by turning off HDR in Roku's display settings:

  1. On your Roku, go to Settings.
  2. Open Display type.
  3. Choose a 4K 30 Hz, 4K 60 Hz or 4K HDR 60 Hz TV option instead of the HDR setting you had.

Local channels missing on Roku

Streaming players don't have GPS, so YouTube TV can't tell where you are from the box itself. Google says devices without built-in GPS need you to verify your location using a mobile device. Open YouTube TV on your phone, go to Settings, then Location, and tap Update playback area. Do it while you're at home, connected to your home Wi-Fi, so the location YouTube TV records matches where the Roku lives.

Multiview looks worse or has fewer options

If you use multiview to watch several games at once, older devices behave differently. Google says some older devices, mostly from before 2018, may see fewer customisation options and reduced picture quality in multiview. That's a hardware limit rather than a fault.

YouTube TV app won't open at all

  • Remove the channel, restart the Roku and reinstall it.
  • Make sure the Roku software is up to date. App updates on Roku arrive with system updates.
  • Check another app works, to rule out your internet connection.
  • Sign out and back in to YouTube TV.

If you've signed in to YouTube on lots of old TVs and boxes over the years, tidy them up: here's how to manage the devices signed in to YouTube.

If the regular YouTube app is the one misbehaving, not YouTube TV, the causes overlap but the app is different. My guide to a YouTube black screen covers the main YouTube app.

When it's not your Roku

If YouTube TV fails on every device in your home at the same moment, it's either your internet or an outage on Google's side. Wait a few minutes, check whether other people are reporting problems, and don't reset your Roku to factory settings over a problem that isn't on your end. A factory reset wipes every app and sign-in, which is a lot of work for nothing.

My verdict

Check your Roku model is on Google's supported list, then match the fix to the symptom: HDMI Ultra HD Color for HDCP errors, a non-HDR Display type for choppy video, and a phone location check for missing local channels. Those three Roku-specific fixes solve most problems that a simple restart doesn't.
