When Telegram isn't working, look at the word at the top of your chat list first. If it says Connecting... or Waiting for network..., the problem is almost always your internet, a stuck proxy or a power-saving setting on your phone, not Telegram itself. If it says Updating... for a few seconds and then clears, that's normal syncing.
The next most useful thing to know: Telegram rarely goes down for everyone at once, so before you reinstall anything, open a website or another app on the same connection. If those load and Telegram still won't, work through the fix order below from the top. It's sorted from the quickest, most likely fix to the slowest.
The catch most people miss: a proxy you switched on months ago (or that a group link added for you) stays saved. When that proxy dies, Telegram keeps trying it and sits on Connecting... forever, even on perfect Wi-Fi.
What the status line at the top is telling you
Telegram swaps your app name at the top of the chat list for a short status word whenever something's wrong. It's the fastest clue you'll get, so read it before you touch any settings.
| What you see | What it usually means | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting for network... | Your phone has no working internet at all | Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, toggle airplane mode on and off |
| Connecting... | You have internet, but Telegram can't reach its servers | Turn off any proxy or VPN, then switch networks |
| Connecting to proxy... | Telegram is routing through a saved proxy that isn't answering | Turn Use Proxy off in Data and Storage |
| Updating... | Telegram is syncing new messages after being offline | Wait; it should clear on its own |
| No status word, but chats won't load | A stuck cache or an outdated app | Update the app, then clear the cache |
If a status word stays on screen for more than a minute or two, it's not going to fix itself. Move on to the steps.
Fix it in this order
Do these one at a time and check Telegram after each step. Most people are back online by step three.
- Test the network. Open any other app or a website. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round. Turn airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off. If nothing else loads either, the problem isn't Telegram.
- Update the app. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Telegram and tap Update if it shows. Old versions can stop connecting after Telegram changes things on its side.
- Turn off the proxy. Go to Settings, then Data and Storage, then the proxy section near the bottom, and switch Use Proxy off. On Telegram Desktop the connection type lives under Settings, then Advanced. If you've got a VPN app running, pause that too.
- Let Telegram run in the background. On Android, open your phone's Settings, then Apps, then Telegram, and make sure background data is allowed and battery optimisation isn't restricting it. On iPhone, check Background App Refresh and Low Power Mode. Aggressive battery savers are a common reason messages only arrive when you open the app.
- Clear the cache. In Telegram, go to Settings, then Data and Storage, then Storage Usage, and tap Clear cache. This frees space without logging you out, and your chats stay safe in Telegram's cloud.
- Reinstall, last of all. Delete the app, restart your phone and install it again. You'll need your phone number and the login code, plus your two-step verification password if you've set one, so make sure you know it before you delete anything.
App menus change between versions. If a menu name above looks different on your phone, open Telegram's Settings and search for the word, such as proxy or cache.
If the app connects but files won't download, that's a separate problem with its own fixes. I've covered it in why Telegram is not downloading files.
When it's Telegram, not you
Sometimes it really is on Telegram's end. These are the signs that point that way:
- Your friends in other cities say Telegram's stuck for them too, on different networks.
- Messages send for some chats but not others, or media fails while text goes through.
- Every other app on your phone works normally, and you've already turned off any proxy or VPN.
- An independent outage tracker (the kind of site that collects user problem reports for popular apps) shows a sudden spike of reports in the last hour.
Telegram doesn't run a public status page. It posts news on its official accounts, which its own FAQ names as the Telegram account on X and Telegram's channels inside the app. Those are the only official accounts, and Telegram's FAQ warns that it has no other support accounts on social media, so ignore anyone in your DMs claiming to be Telegram support.
If it's a wider outage, there's nothing to fix on your phone. Don't reinstall or clear anything; just wait it out.

Telegram not working in India: what's different
Many of the searches for this problem come from India, and a few causes show up more often there:
- Mobile data that looks connected but isn't. A weak 4G or 5G signal can show full bars while barely passing data. Toggle mobile data off and on, or try Wi-Fi.
- DNS trouble. If Telegram fails on one network but works on another, the network's DNS may be the issue. On Android, you can try the Private DNS option in your phone's network settings with a well-known public DNS provider, then switch it back if nothing changes.
- Blocked networks. Some offices, colleges, schools and public Wi-Fi networks block messaging apps. If Telegram fails only on one Wi-Fi network, ask whoever runs it, or use your own mobile data.
- Data saver mode. Phone-level data saver can stop Telegram from syncing in the background. Add Telegram as an exception.
Telegram itself isn't banned nationwide in India, so if it works on one network and not another, it's that network.
What I'd do
I'd read the status word first, then go straight to the proxy setting, because that's the fix most guides skip. If it still won't connect on two different networks, I'd check an outage tracker before reinstalling anything.
If Telegram's letting you down often, it's worth knowing what else is out there; I've rounded up the main Telegram alternatives and what each one's like to use.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Telegram keep saying Connecting?
Connecting... means you have some internet but Telegram can't reach its servers. The usual cause is a saved proxy or a VPN that's stopped working, or a network that blocks messaging apps. Turn off Use Proxy in Data and Storage, pause any VPN and try a different network.
Is Telegram down right now?
Telegram doesn't have a public status page. Ask a friend on a different network, look at an independent outage tracker for a spike in reports, and check Telegram's official account on X. If only you are affected, it's your connection or settings.
Will clearing the Telegram cache delete my chats?
No. Clearing the cache in Settings, Data and Storage, Storage Usage removes downloaded media from your phone, but your chats stay in Telegram's cloud. Media will download again when you open it.
Why does Telegram only get messages when I open it?
Your phone is probably limiting it in the background. Allow background data and remove battery optimisation for Telegram on Android, or check Background App Refresh and Low Power Mode on iPhone.
Telegram works but I can't join a group link. Why?
Group links can expire or be revoked by the admin, and some groups need approval. My guide on how to join a Telegram group covers each case.
