TikTok Group Chat: How to Start One and Who You Can Add

To start a TikTok group chat, tap Inbox, tap the Chat button at the top, pick friends and tap Start group chat. You can also share a post and choose Create group chat with friends, picking up to 31 people. You can only add mutual friends, and group chats aren't available everywhere yet.

Group chats turn TikTok into a place to plan, gossip and share videos with a whole crew at once. Instead of sending the same video to five friends one by one, you drop it in one chat and everyone reacts together. Here's how to start one, who you can add, and why some people don't see the option at all.

How to make a group chat on TikTok from your inbox

  1. Tap Inbox at the bottom of the app.
  2. Tap the Chat button at the top. You can also open an existing chat and tap More options.
  3. Select the friends you want in the group.
  4. Tap Start group chat.

How to start a group chat from a video

  1. Go to the video you want to share.
  2. Tap the Share button, or press and hold the post.
  3. Choose Create group chat with friends and pick who to add. TikTok says you can choose up to 31 people.
  4. Add an optional message and tap Send.

This route is perfect when a video sparks the conversation. The group starts with the video already in it.

The mutual rule surprises people. You and the other person both need to follow each other. If someone's missing from the list, check you follow each other first.

Why can't I make a group chat on TikTok?

  • It isn't available in your country yet. TikTok says private group chats aren't currently available everywhere.
  • The person isn't a mutual friend. Only people you follow who follow you back can be added.
  • Age limits. Messaging is only for users 16 and over.
  • Family Pairing. Parents and guardians can restrict messaging for teens.
  • Old app version. Update TikTok and look for the Chat button in your inbox again.

What you can share in a group chat

You can share TikTok videos, effects, hashtags and sounds, plus your own messages, emojis, GIFs and stickers. One limit: private videos can't be shared, and if a creator makes a video private after you shared it, it becomes unavailable in the chat. If a friend says a video won't play, that's often why.

Handy features inside chats

  • Translate: press and hold a message and tap Translate. Only the text is translated, and only you see the translation.
  • Reactions and replies: press and hold a message to react, reply or forward it.
  • Stickers: tap the emoji button to send stickers, and add favourites so they're easy to find.

Group chat etiquette

A good group chat stays fun because people respect it. Ask before adding someone to a big group, keep the video sharing relevant, and remember that everyone in the chat sees what you send. If you send something by mistake, here's how to delete TikTok messages. If the chat gets too busy, muting is kinder than leaving.

Group chats for creators and small businesses

Group chats can work well for small communities: a few loyal customers, a creator's inner circle, or a team planning content. Keep groups small and personal, because the mutual-friend rule means everyone must follow each other. For wider audiences, comments and LIVE are better tools. If you go LIVE with your group, here's how to manage TikTok LIVE chat.

Group chat ideas

  • Trip planning: share travel videos and ideas with the people coming along.
  • Recipe swaps: drop cooking videos in for friends who love to cook.
  • Family chats: share funny videos without flooding everyone's individual inbox.
  • Hobby groups: a few friends sharing fitness, craft or gaming videos.
  • Content teams: creators can collect video ideas and trends in one place.

Keeping a group chat safe

Because you can only add mutual friends, group chats are more contained than open comments. Even so, think about who's in the group before you share anything personal. For teen accounts, remember that messaging starts at 16, and parents can restrict it through Family Pairing. If a group stops being fun, it's fine to leave.

Finally, if a group chat goes quiet, don't worry about tidying it away straight away. It's easy to revive with a new video when something comes up that the whole group will enjoy, and starting a fresh chat every time can confuse people about which group to use. One clear group per circle of friends usually works best.

My verdict

TikTok group chats are easy to start from your inbox or straight from a video, with up to 31 people when you start from a post. Everyone must be a mutual friend, messaging is for 16 and over, and the feature isn't available everywhere yet, so if you can't find it, check those three things first.
