TikTok Activity Status: Green Dot and Last Active Explained

TikTok Activity Status shows a green dot when a mutual follower is online and a last-active time in your inbox, but only if you both turn it on and you're 18 or over. It's off by default, and you switch it on or off in Settings and privacy, then Privacy.

If you've noticed a green dot on a friend's TikTok profile picture, that's Activity Status. It tells mutual followers when you're online or how long ago you were. Some people love it for chatting, others find it a bit too revealing. Here's exactly how it works, who can see yours, and how to switch it off.

How TikTok Activity Status works

QuestionAnswer from TikTok
Who can see my status?Mutual followers, people you follow who follow you back
Does it work if only I turn it on?No. Both of you need it on
Who can use it?People aged 18 or older
Is it on by default? No. It's turned off by default
How long is last active shown?Up to 2 days. After that, nothing is shown

The two-way rule is the key. TikTok says if only one of you has Activity Status on, neither of you sees the other's status. It's a fair system: you can't watch someone's activity without sharing your own.

What the green dot and timestamps mean

  • Green dot: the person is online now. TikTok notes the dot may still show for a little while after they've gone inactive, so it's not perfectly live.
  • Last active time: when someone isn't online, TikTok shows a relative timestamp of when they were last active, in your inbox and message threads.
  • No status: if they were last active more than 2 days ago, or they've turned the feature off, nothing appears.

Where you'll see Activity Status

  • Your Inbox.
  • Inside message threads.
  • On a mutual follower's Profile.
  • In the list of people when you tag someone in a comment or share a video.

How to turn Activity Status on or off

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top.
  3. Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy.
  4. Switch Activity Status on or off.

Remember: when you turn it off, you and your mutual followers won't see each other's status, even if they've left it on. Privacy works both ways.

Why can't I see someone's green dot?

  • One of you has it off. Both need it on, and it's off by default.
  • You're not mutual followers. You both need to follow each other.
  • Age. Activity Status is only for people 18 and over.
  • They were last active over 2 days ago. TikTok stops showing a status after that.
  • Your app is old. Update TikTok if the setting is missing.

Should you turn it on?

It depends how you use TikTok. If you chat a lot with friends in DMs, seeing who's online makes it easier to catch them. If you'd rather scroll in peace, or you don't want friends to know you're up at 2am, leave it off. Because it's off by default, you only share your activity if you choose to.

For creators and businesses, Activity Status can set expectations. If customers see you were active an hour ago but haven't replied, they may feel ignored. Many business accounts leave it off and reply on their own schedule instead.

While you're in Privacy, it's worth reviewing who can see your story views and whether your account is easy to find. Here's how to turn off TikTok story views and how to hide your TikTok account from friends. Together with Activity Status, they decide how visible your account is.

Activity Status vs read receipts

Activity Status is easy to confuse with read status in messages. Activity Status shows whether a mutual follower is online or when they were last active. Read status is about whether someone has opened your message. They're separate settings, so turning one off doesn't turn off the other. If you want to stay low-key in DMs, check both.

A quick privacy routine

  1. Decide whether you want friends to see when you're online. If not, leave Activity Status off.
  2. Check who can send you messages in your privacy settings.
  3. Review your story view settings.
  4. Look at who follows you. Only mutual followers can see your status, so removing a follower also removes their view of it.

Running through this list every few months keeps your TikTok as private or as social as you want it.

If you're unsure, try it for a week. Turn Activity Status on, see whether being able to catch friends online helps your chats, and switch it back off if it starts to feel like pressure to reply. Because the setting works both ways, your friends will notice the change too, so there's no hiding that you've switched it off. That's also why many people simply leave it at the default.

My verdict

TikTok Activity Status is a two-way, opt-in feature: a green dot for mutual followers who are online and a last-active time for up to 2 days. It's off by default and only for adults. Turn it on in Settings and privacy, Privacy if you like chatting live, and leave it off if you'd rather keep your scrolling private.
