Instagram Audio Unavailable: Why It Happens and the Fix

Audio unavailable on Instagram means the song on a post or reel has been muted, usually because of music licensing or a rights holder's claim. Your post stays up without sound. On your own content, tap Audio unavailable, then Replace audio to pick a new licensed track, which you can only do once.

Few things are more annoying than posting a reel with the perfect song and coming back to find it silent with the words 'Audio unavailable'. The good news is your post hasn't been removed, and on your own content you can often fix it in a minute. The catch is you get one shot at the fix, so it's worth understanding why it happened first.

Why Instagram says audio unavailable

Instagram's help pages give a clear set of reasons. On your own posts and reels, the audio may be muted because:

  • You don't have access to the Licensed Music Library, for example because of your account type or region.
  • Instagram's licensing agreements with rights holders have changed.
  • The rights holder blocked your content because it contains something they own.

Instagram explains that it has agreements with music rights holders meant to protect artists and creators, and any change to those agreements can mute audio. In other words, a song that worked a while ago might not work now, through no fault of yours.

How to replace muted audio on your post or reel

  1. Open Instagram and find the post or reel with the muted audio.
  2. Tap Audio unavailable.
  3. Tap Replace audio, then tap Replace audio again.
  4. Pick a track and choose the part you want.
  5. Tap Done in the top right, then Done again.

You may also see a notification asking you to replace the audio when you view the post. Either route works.

The rules most people miss

RuleWhat it means
You can only replace a muted track one timeChoose the new song carefully. You won't get a second swap
The new song must be licensed audioPick from the Instagram audio library, not a random upload
Reels can only be changed if they were mutedYou can't use this to swap the song on a reel that still plays fine
Muted posts stay visiblePeople can still see the post, just without the original sound

The one-time rule is the big one. If you rush and pick a track that also gets muted later, you're stuck. Pick something that's popular and clearly available in the library, or use audio from Instagram's Sound Collection.

When you can't hear audio on someone else's reel

If it's another account's post that's silent, the problem isn't on your side. Instagram lists these possible reasons:

  • The audio isn't available in your country or region.
  • The creator didn't have access to the audio's source, so the track was muted.
  • The track has been taken down.
  • The artist or label is having technical issues.
  • Licensing agreements have changed, or the rights holder blocked the content.

There's nothing you can do to restore someone else's sound. If you were planning to use that audio in your own reel, pick another track, because there's a good chance it won't work for you either.

How to avoid muted audio in the first place

  • Use Instagram's own audio library. Tracks added inside the app are licensed for use there, at least until agreements change.
  • Try the Sound Collection. Instagram says if you don't have access to the licensed library, you can use its Sound Collection of music and sound effects.
  • Avoid music baked into your video. A song playing in the background of your recording can trigger a rights holder's claim.
  • Check your account type. If you're on a business account, music options can be narrower, so test before you film around a song.

Is it the music, or is my sound broken?

Before you assume it's a licensing problem, rule out the basics. If every reel is silent, not just one, check your phone's volume and silent switch, and see whether sound plays in other apps. If audio is missing across Instagram, our guide to why Instagram is lagging or glitching covers the app-side fixes. 'Audio unavailable' on a single post is almost always about the track, not your phone.

What muted audio means for your reach

A muted reel can still be viewed, but a silent video usually holds attention less well than one with sound. If the post matters, for example it's a launch or a popular reel, use your one replacement on a track that suits it. If it's an old post with little traffic, you might simply leave it. And if you'd like to tweak the post in other ways too, here's what you can edit on an Instagram reel after posting.

Choosing a replacement track you won't regret

Since you only get one replacement, pick with care. Choose a track that fits the mood and the pace of your video, so cuts still land on the beat. Preview it with your clip before you tap Done. If the reel is for a business, look for something that's widely used on Instagram rather than a niche track, and keep the original idea of the video in mind: a calm product demo doesn't need the loudest song in the library.

If you can't find a song that fits, a sound effect or ambient track from the Sound Collection can be a safer choice than a chart hit.

My verdict

'Audio unavailable' means the track was muted, usually for licensing or rights reasons, and your post is still live. On your own content, tap Audio unavailable and Replace audio, but choose carefully because you only get one replacement. On other people's content, there's no fix on your side.
