The short version: yes, DaVinci Resolve is free. Blackmagic Design offers a free version for Mac, Windows and Linux that handles 8-bit video at up to 60 frames per second in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160), and it includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading. The upgrade, DaVinci Resolve Studio, adds the AI Neural Engine, 10-bit video and resolutions beyond 4K.
DaVinci Resolve has a reputation as the editor Hollywood uses, which makes people suspicious that the free version must be a cut-down demo. It isn't. Blackmagic says it offers a free version so you can learn on the same tools professional artists use.

What Studio adds on top
Blackmagic says Studio includes everything in the free version, plus the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, dozens of extra Resolve FX, temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, text based editing, magic mask, film grain and optical blur. The Neural Engine powers features such as facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing, speed warp retiming, super scale and auto colour matching.
For a lot of small business video, like talking-head clips, tutorials and social edits, you'll never miss most of those. Text based editing is the one I'd look at hardest, because cutting a video by editing its transcript can save a lot of time on interview content.
The DaVinci Resolve free version catch
Here's what to check before you start a big project. Blackmagic lists the free version as working with virtually all 8-bit video formats. The higher bit depth, 10-bit video, is part of Studio. So if your camera records in 10-bit, look at your camera's settings and Blackmagic's spec before you commit a client job to the free version.
The same goes for frame rate and resolution. Up to 60 frames per second in Ultra HD covers most YouTube and social work. If you shoot 120 frames per second for slow motion, or above 4K, that's where the free version stops.
How to get started with DaVinci Resolve for free
- Download DaVinci Resolve from the Blackmagic Design website and pick the free version for your computer.
- Check your camera's recording settings: bit depth, frame rate and resolution.
- Start a short practice project on the Cut page before tackling a full edit.
- Learn the Color page basics, since grading is where Resolve stands out.
- Look at Studio only when you hit a limit you can name, such as 10-bit footage or an AI feature you need.
Not sure Resolve is for you?
Resolve has a learning curve. If you want something gentler, compare it with the options in my guide to the best free video editing software for beginners, or see the best video editing software for YouTube if that's where your videos go.
Who the free version suits best
It's a brilliant fit for creators and small businesses who want to learn editing in depth and don't want to outgrow their software in six months. You get the same editing, colour and Fairlight audio tools the industry uses, so every hour you put in builds a skill that transfers.
It's a poorer fit if you need to turn around quick social clips on a phone, or if you want AI to do the heavy lifting for you. Resolve rewards people who are willing to learn, and the AI shortcuts that speed things up sit in Studio.
Your computer matters as well. Resolve leans on your graphics card, so an older laptop can struggle with Ultra HD footage. If playback stutters, try a lower timeline resolution while you edit and switch back up for the final export.
A sensible way to learn it for free
Start with one short real project rather than a tutorial on its own, such as a one minute clip for your website or socials. Edit it on the Cut page, give it a simple grade on the Color page, clean up the audio with Fairlight, then export. Doing one complete project end to end teaches you more than watching hours of videos, and you'll quickly find out whether the free version covers everything you need.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Keep your exports simple while you learn. A standard export preset for YouTube or social will look right on most screens, and you can explore the advanced options once you know what you're changing and why.
If you work with others, the free version's multi-user collaboration is a bigger deal than it sounds. Blackmagic says project libraries are built for real time local and remote collaboration, so an editor and a colourist can work on the same project at the same time instead of passing files back and forth.
My verdict: DaVinci Resolve's free version is the most capable free editor you can download. Check your footage is 8-bit and up to 60 frames per second, and you can do serious work without upgrading.
