The short version: yes, Claude is free. Anthropic's Free plan lets you chat with Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, search the web, create files, run code, use memory and build Artifacts. What you don't get on Free is Claude Code, Research or the Opus models, and your usage is capped in a rolling five-hour window.
Plenty of business owners have heard good things about Claude but don't want to sign up for yet another plan before they know if it's any good. The free plan is a fair way to find out, as long as you know where its edges are.
What you get on Claude's free plan
Anthropic's own plan card lists these on Free:
- Chat everywhere: on the web, the desktop app and the iOS and Android apps.
- Web search: Claude can look things up rather than relying only on what it already knows.
- Files and code: it can create and edit files and run code for you.
- Memory: it can remember context across conversations.
- Connectors: you can connect your apps and tools.
- Artifacts, Claude Design, Slides and Docs: for building documents, decks and small apps inside the chat.
- Projects: up to five on the free plan, according to the comparison table.

How Claude's usage limits work on Free
This is the part people misunderstand. Anthropic says every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and there's no fixed message count. How far you get depends on how long and complex your conversations are, which model you pick and which features you use. Its own summary is that Free covers everyday questions.
Your use across the web, desktop and mobile apps all draws from the same pool, so switching from your laptop to your phone doesn't give you a fresh allowance. Anthropic also says it may limit usage in other ways, such as weekly or monthly caps, to keep access fair.
When you hit the limit, you can wait for it to reset or move to a higher plan. You can check where you stand at any time under Settings, then Usage.
The Claude free plan catch most people miss
Here's the thing nobody tells you. Long chats burn through your allowance faster, because the length of the conversation is one of the things Anthropic says it counts. If you keep one giant thread going all day, you'll hit the wall sooner than someone who starts a fresh chat for each new task.
The second catch is Claude Code. It's become one of the main reasons people talk about Claude, but Anthropic lists it as included in all of its higher plans, not Free. The same goes for Research and the Opus models. So if a friend shows you something impressive, check which plan they were on before you assume you'll get the same result.
And if you ever try Pro and then cancel, Anthropic says your chats, projects and files stay with your account, which moves back to the free plan once the period ends. Some features simply stop being available.
How to get the most from Claude for free
- Sign up at claude.ai with your email or Google account and pick the Free plan.
- Start a new chat for each new task rather than keeping one long thread going.
- Use a project for your recurring work so your instructions and files are in one place.
- Turn on memory if you want Claude to keep context between conversations.
- Check Settings, then Usage, before you start a big job so you don't run out halfway through.
Using Claude well once you're in
If you're deciding which model to use when you do upgrade, my guide to Claude Opus vs Sonnet explains the difference in plain English. For ideas on what to hand over first, see how to use Claude for business tasks.
Who Claude's free plan suits best
Free works well if you use Claude a few times a day for writing, planning, summarising or thinking a problem through. It's a good fit for drafting emails, turning messy notes into a clear plan, rewriting a page so it's easier to read or checking your reasoning before a meeting. Because it can search the web, create files and run code, you can test most of what people rave about without signing up for anything.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
It's a weaker fit if your whole working day runs through Claude. If you're writing long reports, working through big documents or coding in the terminal, you'll either hit the usage window regularly or find the tool you want sits on a higher plan. That's the moment to compare plans, not before.
One more tip: write your standing instructions once, in a project or in your preferences, rather than retyping them in every chat. Shorter prompts and fresh chats make your free allowance stretch a lot further, and the answers tend to be sharper too.
Free Claude for teams and businesses
If you're thinking about Claude for a team, the free plan is personal. Anthropic's Team and Enterprise plans add things like single sign-on, central administration, role-based access and audit logs, none of which are on Free. So use the free plan to see whether Claude suits the work, then look at the team options once you know who'd use it and for what.
My verdict: Claude's free plan is good enough to test it on your real work, not just toy questions. Keep your chats short and focused, and you'll know within a week whether the extra usage and tools on Pro are worth it for you.
