Zendesk vs Intercom: Which Support Platform Fits Your Team?

Zendesk suits support teams that want deep ticketing, routing and a huge app library, with AI agents included in every Suite and Support plan. Intercom suits businesses that lead with live chat in their website or app and want its Fin AI Agent answering first, and Fin can even sit on top of another helpdesk. Neither lists a free plan, so use the trials to test your real tickets.

Customer support tools used to be about tickets. Now they're about how much an AI agent can answer before a human steps in. Zendesk and Intercom both lean hard into that. I read Zendesk's plans page and Intercom's plans page, and here's how they compare in their own words.

Zendesk in depth

Zendesk's Support Team plan is built for teams that have outgrown a shared inbox, with email and ticketing, routing, prebuilt dashboards, pre-written responses, customer context and automations. Suite Team adds AI agents, an AI knowledge base, omnichannel routing, messaging and live chat and telephony. Suite Professional adds Admin Copilot and skills-based routing for bigger teams. Zendesk lists more than 1,800 apps and integrations, so it's likely to connect to the tools you're already using.

Intercom in depth

Intercom's Essential plan covers Messenger live chat, a shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, a public help center and basic automation. Advanced adds a workflow builder, multiple team inboxes, round robin assignment, a multilingual help center and 20 Lite seats. Expert adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand messenger and 50 Lite seats. Fin AI Agent is available on every plan and is measured by the outcomes it delivers.

What I like about Intercom's approach is that the chat widget isn't an add-on, it's the heart of the product. If your customers already message you from your website or app, you're starting where they are.

You don't have to replace your helpdesk to get Fin

This is the detail most comparisons miss. Intercom's plans page offers Fin AI Agent on its own, working with an existing helpdesk such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk, and says it learns your support content and hands over to agents in your inbox. So if you already run a helpdesk your team likes, the choice may not be Zendesk or Intercom at all. It may be your current helpdesk with Fin answering first. Check that your helpdesk is supported before you plan around it.

Which support team fits which

Zendesk fits support teams with high ticket volumes across email, phone and chat, who need routing rules and lots of integrations. Intercom fits product and service businesses where most conversations start in the chat widget on a website or app, and where an AI agent answering first makes sense. My guide to the live chat features that matter for a small business helps you choose, and so does this walkthrough on how to set up an AI chatbot for customer service.

My advice for testing both

Export fifty recent customer questions before you start either trial. Load your help articles, then feed those real questions to each AI agent and count how many it answers well without a human. That number, and how your team feels using the inbox for a week, will tell you more than any feature table. If you're a startup, check both startup programmes first.
