YouTube Premium Lite is a lighter YouTube Premium membership that lets you watch most YouTube and YouTube Kids videos without ads, offline and in the background. The big catch is music: ads can still appear on music content and Shorts, and Premium Lite doesn't include YouTube Music Premium.
Premium Lite started as a pilot in a handful of countries and reached the US in March 2025, according to the YouTube Blog. In February 2026 YouTube added background play and downloads, which changed what the plan is good for. If you read about it before then, much of what you read is out of date.
What Premium Lite includes
- Ad-free viewing on most videos: YouTube's help page says you won't get ads on videos like gaming, news and more.
- Background play: audio keeps playing when the YouTube app is in the background or your screen is off.
- Downloads: you can download videos and playlists to watch offline.
- YouTube Kids: most YouTube Kids videos are covered too.
What Premium Lite doesn't include
This is where people get caught out. YouTube's help page is specific:
| Feature | Premium Lite | YouTube Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Ad-free on most videos | Yes | Yes |
| Ad-free on music content and Shorts | No, ads may still appear | Yes |
| Ads when you search or browse | May still appear | No |
| Background play and downloads on most videos | Yes | Yes |
| Background play and downloads on music and Shorts | No | Yes |
| YouTube Music Premium | No | Yes |
| Continue watching, Jump ahead, queuing, high quality audio and video | No | Yes |
What YouTube counts as music content
This catches out more people than anything else. YouTube's help page says background play and downloads aren't available on official or premium music videos, Art Tracks and children's songs. It also includes user-made videos with content from YouTube's music partners, and gives covers, dance videos and a vlog with a popular song playing in the background as examples.
So if your viewing is mostly podcasts, tutorials, gaming and news, Lite covers you well. If you mainly use YouTube as a music player, it doesn't.
Is Premium Lite available where you live?
Not everywhere. YouTube keeps a list of available locations on its help page and says it may expand to more users in the future. The 2025 blog post named the US alongside the early pilot countries of Thailand, Germany and Australia, and the 2026 update said the new features would roll out everywhere Premium Lite is offered. Check the sign-up page on your own account: if Lite isn't offered there, it isn't available to you yet.
How to upgrade or cancel Premium Lite
YouTube's help page says that if you signed up on a web browser or through the Google Play Store, you upgrade at youtube.com/paid_memberships:
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships in a web browser.
- Click Manage membership next to Premium Lite.
- Click Upgrade next to the Premium plan you want.
To cancel, go to the same page, click Manage membership, then Deactivate, then Continue. Pick a reason, click Next, then click Yes, cancel.
Premium Lite or full Premium: which one fits?
YouTube's own blog is clear that if you want every video ad-free, offline and in the background, including music and YouTube Music Premium, full Premium is still the option to choose. Here's how I'd decide:
- Pick Lite if you watch tutorials, podcasts, news, gaming or cooking and mostly use a separate app for music.
- Pick full Premium if YouTube is your music player, you play a lot of Shorts, or you want the extras like Jump ahead and queuing.
- Pick neither if you only watch a few videos a week. Ads are the trade-off for free, and that may suit you fine.
How background play and downloads work on Lite
YouTube describes background play as audio that keeps going when the YouTube app is in the background or your screen is off. Downloads let you save videos and playlists to watch when you're not connected to the internet. On Lite, both apply to most videos, which makes it far more useful for commutes, flights and listening to long interviews while you work.
The limits are the same ones as for ads. Neither feature works on Shorts or on music content, so a playlist that mixes talks with music videos will behave differently from one track to the next. If a video won't download or stops when you lock your phone, check whether YouTube treats it as music before you assume something's broken.

My advice
Look at what you watched last week before you choose. If most of it was music or Shorts, Lite will disappoint you, because those are exactly the parts it leaves out. If most of it was learning, news or long-form creators, Lite now does almost everything you'd want since the background play and downloads update. And if you do use YouTube for music too, you might find YouTube Music is the part worth a closer look.
