How to Use GPT-Rosalind: Academic Plan Access and Prompts

GPT-Rosalind is OpenAI's life sciences model, used through Rosalind Workbench on its own or inside Codex. To use it you need approved trusted access: academic labs at US universities can apply for the new Rosalind Academic Plan, which gives up to 30 free seats for up to 12 months once the lab lead is verified.

Most AI launches are aimed at everyone. This one isn't. GPT-Rosalind is a specialist model for biology and drug discovery research, and you can't simply switch it on in ChatGPT. OpenAI opened a new route in on 15 October with the Rosalind Academic Plan, aimed at university labs in the US.

If you work in or alongside a research lab, here's what you get, who can apply, how the vetting works and how to get useful work out of it. If you run a small business outside life sciences, skip to my verdict: there's a short answer for you too.

What GPT-Rosalind and Rosalind Workbench are

OpenAI describes GPT-Rosalind as a purpose-built model for life sciences research. You use it through Rosalind Workbench, a workspace that connects the model to scientific tools across areas like medicinal chemistry, genomics and wet-lab assistance. OpenAI lists these workflows on its Rosalind page:

  • Interrogating sequencing data, with checks on inputs and QC before the next question.
  • Synthesising evidence from papers, biology data and your own results.
  • Choosing promising biological targets.
  • Understanding proteins and variants side by side.
  • Comparing molecular candidates.
  • Planning and refining experiments, including controls and protocol troubleshooting.

Who can apply

Right now the plan is for academic labs at US universities. The route depends on your university:

  • No OpenAI Enterprise agreement at your university: the PI or lab lead applies on behalf of the lab through OpenAI's trusted access process.
  • An existing Enterprise agreement: you apply through your university's own Enterprise access process instead.

How to apply for GPT-Rosalind access

  1. Explore the plan on OpenAI's Rosalind Academic Plan page and check eligibility.
  2. Sign in and apply, describing your research and your lab.
  3. Complete verification: share the details OpenAI asks for and sign the agreement.
  4. Start research once access is active, then add up to 30 named lab members.

The catch people miss is how thorough the vetting is. Before access goes live, OpenAI says it verifies the institution and the lab lead's identity, reviews the lead's background and authority to oversee access, looks at the lab's research and intended use, and sets responsibilities for both the lab lead and a named institutional safety contact. Monitoring continues afterwards. Allow time for that, and line up your safety contact before you apply.

Before you apply: a quick checklist

  • Confirm whether your university already has an OpenAI Enterprise agreement, because that changes where you apply.
  • Agree who'll act as the lab lead, since they're responsible for approved use and member permissions.
  • Name your institutional safety contact up front.
  • Write a short, plain description of your research and how you'd use the model.
  • List the people who need seats, remembering the cap is 30 named members.

Tools that work with GPT-Rosalind

Named here, not linked:

  • Rosalind Workbench, the workspace GPT-Rosalind runs in.
  • Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, which can open Rosalind Workbench directly.
  • ChatGPT Business, which the plan's seats are based on.
  • OpenAI's life science research plugins, which OpenAI points to for connecting research tools.
  • Your electronic lab notebook, for recording what the model suggested and what you decided.

If you're a research organisation or spin-out working out where AI fits in your workflows, that's the kind of project I help with.

My verdict

For a US university lab, it's well worth applying: the access is generous, your data isn't used for training by default and the vetting is a feature, not a hurdle. For everyone else, it isn't something you can use yet. If you run a small business outside life sciences, you don't need GPT-Rosalind. The everyday ChatGPT and Codex tools will do far more for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is GPT-Rosalind?

It's OpenAI's dedicated life sciences model, built for research tasks like evidence synthesis, target selection, protein and variant analysis and experiment planning. You use it through Rosalind Workbench.

Can anyone use GPT-Rosalind?

No. Access is subject to OpenAI's trusted-access approval. The Rosalind Academic Plan is currently open to academic labs at US universities.

Is the Rosalind Academic Plan free?

OpenAI says eligible labs get up to 30 Business Standard seats free for up to 12 months, with GPT-Rosalind access after approval.

Does the plan include API access?

Not at this time. OpenAI says API access isn't included in the Rosalind Academic Plan.

Is my research data used to train OpenAI's models?

Not by default. OpenAI says research data shared through the Rosalind Academic Plan isn't used to train its models by default.
