To create a UPI ID, install a UPI app, sign in with the mobile number registered with your bank, add your bank account and set a UPI PIN using your debit card or Aadhaar. The app creates your UPI ID automatically during setup, and you can add extra IDs later.
You don't pick a UPI ID from nowhere. It's created by the app, through a partner bank, once your bank account is verified. Some apps let you choose the part before the @.
What you need before you start
| You need | Why |
|---|---|
| A bank account that works with UPI | Google says your bank must work with UPI to add the account |
| The SIM registered with that bank in your phone | The app verifies you by SMS from that number |
| Your debit card, or Aadhaar linked to the same number | To set the UPI PIN |
| A UPI app | Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank's app |
The SIM is where most first-time setups fail. If the bank has an old number on file, or the SIM for that number is in a different phone, verification won't go through. Update your number at the bank before you start.
Create your UPI ID, step by step
- Install your chosen UPI app from the official app store.
- Sign up with the mobile number registered with your bank. Let the app send the verification SMS.
- Choose Add bank account and pick your bank from the list.
- The app finds accounts linked to your number. Select yours.
- Set your UPI PIN with your debit card details or Aadhaar, as your bank allows.
- Your UPI ID is now created. Find it on your profile, or in Google Pay under Bank account, then Manage UPI IDs.
Google's help page notes that a new UPI ID is created for you when you sign up, and that the ID made through Google Pay becomes your default one there. If a menu name looks different on your phone, search the app's settings for UPI ID.
The catch: each app makes its own ID
Google says you can't use a UPI ID created in another UPI app or through net banking on Google Pay. So if you set up both PhonePe and Google Pay, you'll get two different UPI IDs. Both pay into the same bank account. Your UPI PIN, though, belongs to the bank account, so if you've already set one, you can use the same PIN in the new app.
Add a second UPI ID in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay and tap your photo.
- Under Payment methods, tap Bank account.
- Select the bank account.
- Select Manage UPI IDs.
- Tap Add next to the ID you want to create.
You can have up to 4 UPI IDs per bank account on Google Pay. Google explains that extra IDs, made through partner banks like SBI, HDFC, Axis and ICICI, help payments go through when one server is having trouble.
One small cost to know about: to activate a new UPI ID, Google Pay sends an SMS to the partner bank from your phone. On Android it happens in the background; on iPhone you tap Send. Google says standard SMS rates apply.
Choosing a UPI ID that works for you
- If you can choose, keep it simple and easy to read out.
- Avoid your date of birth or anything that gives away personal details.
- For a side business, consider a separate bank account and UPI ID so personal and business payments don't mix.
Setting up UPI on a new phone
Moving to a new phone is when many people end up creating UPI from scratch again. Put the SIM registered with your bank into the new phone first, then install your UPI app and sign in with that number. The app will find your bank account again. If you set a UPI PIN before, it still works, because the PIN belongs to the bank account rather than the old phone.
Your old UPI ID may or may not come back. Google says an old ID can only be restored with the same phone number, device, bank account and Google Account, so on a new device you may get a new ID. If people pay you on the old one, send them the new ID or QR code once setup is done. And if you used UPI Lite on the old phone, check its balance was moved or returned to your bank before you wipe the old handset.

UPI for family members
If you're setting up UPI for a parent or a teenager, sit with them and do it on their phone with their own SIM. It's tempting to add their account to your phone to save time, but that ties their payments to your device and makes it harder for them to manage alone. For someone without a bank account, UPI Circle lets them pay from yours within limits you set, which is a far safer arrangement than sharing a PIN.
Common setup errors and fixes
- No bank account found: the mobile number on your bank account doesn't match the SIM. Fix it at the bank.
- SMS verification failed: check you have network signal and SMS balance on prepaid plans, and that the SIM is in the slot the app expects.
- Can't set the PIN: your debit card may be inactive or expired. Try the Aadhaar route if your bank offers it.
- Mobile number linked to several accounts: pick the right account when the app lists them, or ask your bank to tidy up your customer IDs.
Stay safe from day one
Download UPI apps only from the official app store, and never from a link in a message. No real app or bank will ask you to share an OTP over the phone during setup. And once you're set up, remember the golden rule: you only enter your UPI PIN to pay, never to receive.

Frequently asked questions
Can I create a UPI ID without a debit card?
Yes, if your bank supports Aadhaar verification. The Aadhaar must be linked to the same mobile number as your bank account.
How many UPI IDs can I create?
Google Pay allows up to 4 UPI IDs for each bank account you add.
Can I use my PhonePe UPI ID in Google Pay?
No. Google says IDs created in other apps or through net banking can't be used on Google Pay. Each app creates its own.
Does creating a UPI ID cost anything?
There's no fee for the ID, but Google Pay sends an activation SMS from your phone, charged at standard SMS rates.
