How to Search Gmail by Date: Operators and Date Ranges

To search Gmail by date, type after: and before: with a date into the search box, for example after:2025/01/01 before:2025/05/01. You can also search, then pick the Any time chip under the search box, or open Show search options and use Date within. For relative dates, use older_than:1y or newer_than:2d.

Finding that one quote email from last spring is easy once you know Gmail's date operators. You type a short command such as after: or before: straight into the search box, and Gmail filters your mail to that window. There are three ways to do it: operators, the Any time chip, and the advanced search panel. I use operators most because they're quickest once you've learned two of them.

Gmail date operators you can type

OperatorWhat it findsExample
after:Emails received after a dateafter:2004/04/16
before:Emails received before a datebefore:2004/04/18
older: / newer:Emails received during a time periodnewer:2004/04/16
older_than:Emails older than a period (d, m or y)older_than:1y
newer_than:Emails newer than a period (d, m or y)newer_than:2d

Google's help shows dates written year first with slashes, like 2004/04/16, and also month first, like 04/16/2004. I stick to year first, because it avoids any confusion between British and American date order.

Search a date range step by step

  1. Open Gmail on your computer.
  2. Click the search box at the top.
  3. Type after: followed by the start date, a space, then before: and the end date. Google's own example is after:2025/01/01 before:2025/05/01.
  4. Add anything else you know, such as from: and a name or email address.
  5. Press Enter.

You can combine operators freely. Something like from:amy after:2025/01/01 before:2025/05/01 finds emails from Amy in that window. Google's help confirms you can combine operators to filter your results even more.

Relative dates: older_than and newer_than

When you don't know the exact date, relative searches are handy. Google says older_than: and newer_than: take d for day, m for month or y for year. So newer_than:2d shows the last couple of days, and older_than:1y shows anything more than a year old. Pair older_than with has:attachment and you've got a quick way to find old, bulky emails when your storage is filling up.

Use the Any time chip instead

If you'd rather click than type, Gmail's search chips do the same job.

  1. Type a search term in the box, such as a client's name, and press Enter.
  2. Under the search box, select the Any time chip.
  3. Choose a date range or a specific date.

Google describes the Any time chip as searching for anything sent within a certain date range or specific date. It's the friendliest option if you search by date only now and then.

Advanced search and Date within

For a fuller search form, click Show search options in the search box. Google lists a Date within field there, which searches emails sent within a specific timeframe. Fill in any other fields you like, such as From or Has the words, then click Search. There's also a Create filter button if you want Gmail to apply a rule to messages like these in future.

Date searches I'd keep handy

Mixing a date operator with one other operator covers most real-life searches. Each of these uses operators from Google's own list:

  • from:me newer_than:2d for what you've sent in the last couple of days.
  • has:attachment older_than:1y for old emails with files, handy when storage is tight.
  • is:unread newer_than:2d to catch anything recent you haven't opened.
  • filename:pdf after:2025/01/01 for PDFs received since the start of that year.
  • is:starred before:2025/05/01 for older starred messages you meant to come back to.

Swap the numbers and you've got a search for almost any period. Once a search works, Gmail lets you turn the results into a filter, so similar emails get sorted automatically next time.

Why a date search misses emails

Two things catch people out. First, Spam and Trash aren't included in a normal search. Google says in:anywhere finds emails across Gmail, including Spam and Trash, so add it if a message seems to have vanished. Second, results default to relevance rather than date order. Google says you can sort results by selecting Most relevant or Most recent, and switching to Most recent makes a date range much easier to scan.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

One more detail from Google's help: in a search, a space or a dash separates numbers and a dot counts as a decimal. So write dates with slashes, as Google does, rather than dots.

Searching Gmail on your phone

Google's Android help gives the same operator method for the Gmail app: open Gmail, tap the search box at the top and enter an operator. That's useful when you're out and a client asks about an old email. Type after: and before: just as you would on a computer. I find the chips easier on a laptop, but typed operators are the fastest route on a small screen.

If you run the same search every week, turn it into a rule instead; my guide on how to create a filter in Gmail shows how to label or move matching emails automatically.

What I'd do

Learn just two operators, after: and before:, and write dates year first with slashes. Add from: when you know the sender and in:anywhere when a message seems lost. Then sort by Most recent. It turns a ten-minute scroll into a ten-second search, which is exactly the kind of small win that keeps an inbox under control. If the email you want was archived rather than deleted, here's how to find archived emails in Gmail.
