To save a chat on Snapchat, tap the message once; it turns gray and stays put. Tap it again to unsave it, and it then deletes on the chat's normal timer. Clear from Chat Feed only hides the conversation from your list; Snapchat says it doesn't delete anything saved or sent.
Snapchat chats delete themselves unless someone asks them not to. Saving is that request, and it's a single tap. The confusing bits are what the gray highlight tells other people, what Clear from Chat Feed does (much less than it sounds), and how to change the timer so you don't have to save every message by hand.
Save or unsave one message
- Open the chat.
- Tap the message you want to keep. It gets a gray background, which means it's saved.
- To unsave it, tap the same message again. The gray goes.
Here's what people miss: the gray background is visible to everyone in the chat. Snapchat designed it that way on purpose, so the other person can see exactly which messages you've chosen to keep. There's no private save.
How long chats last if nobody saves them
| Chat type | Default timer | Can you change it? |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-one and group chats | 24 hours after everyone has viewed, or 31 days after sending, whichever is sooner | Yes: After Viewing, 24 Hours, 7 Days or Never |
| Community group chats | 7 days after everyone has viewed | Not covered in the same steps |
| Messages someone saved, replied to or reacted to | Kept longer | Unsave to release them |
So when you unsave a message, it doesn't vanish on the spot. It falls back to whatever timer that chat uses. Saving also keeps any reactions attached to the message, which is handy if the reaction was the point.
Stop saving by hand: set chats to Never
If you'd like a whole conversation to stay, change the timer instead of tapping every line:
- Swipe right from the camera to open the Chat screen.
- Press and hold your friend's or group's name.
- Tap Chat and Notification Settings.
- Tap Delete Chats.
- Choose Never (or 24 Hours or 7 Days After Viewing).
Two catches. First, anyone in the conversation can change this, and everyone sees a status message when they do, so your friend can switch it back. Second, the new setting only applies to messages sent after the change. Older messages keep the timer they were sent with, so save anything important from before.
On the same settings screen you'll find Keep Snaps in Chat, which Snapchat only lets you switch on once the chat is set to 24 Hours, 7 Days or Never. For saving photo and video Snaps themselves, Snapchat only allows it on no-limit photos and looping videos.
Saving in group chats
Groups follow the same rules, just with more eyes on them. Tap a message to save it and every member sees the gray highlight, not only the person who wrote it. The delete timer is shared too: Snapchat says anyone in the conversation can change it, and the whole group gets a status message when that happens. So if one member sets the group to Never, everyone's new messages stay until someone changes it back.
That makes the timer a group decision in practice. If you're running a chat for a club, a team or a family, agree the setting once and let people know, rather than finding out from a status message that someone flipped it. Anything you want to be sure survives, save individually as well.
What Clear from Chat Feed means
This is the most misunderstood option in Snapchat. Clearing a conversation takes it off your Chat list. That's all. Snapchat says plainly that clearing a conversation won't delete any saved or sent content, so your saved messages are still there when you open a new chat with that person.
- On iPhone: Settings, My Privacy & Data, Clear Data, Clear Conversations, then tap the X next to a name.
- On Android: Settings, My Privacy & Data, Clear Conversation.
How to delete a saved chat
Saved messages you sent can be dealt with in two ways. Tap to unsave and let the timer clear it, or press and hold and choose Delete to remove it now. What you can't do is remove saved messages the other person sent: Snapchat doesn't let you delete other people's messages. If they saved something you'd rather they didn't, the only options are your own messages or asking them nicely.

Friendship changes matter too. Snapchat says that if you remove or block each other, saved messages in that one-to-one chat may be removed over time. If you're thinking of blocking someone but want a record, take that into account first. And if you've already blocked and changed your mind, my guide on unblocking someone on Snapchat is the place to start.

My take
Save sparingly and think of the gray as a public bookmark, because that's exactly how it works. For chats you want to keep long term, set the timer to Never rather than tapping every line, and check your friend hasn't switched it back. For anything you need for good, like an address or an agreement, copy it somewhere outside Snapchat. Saved chats can disappear after an unfriend or a block, and that's not a risk worth taking with something that matters.
