Best Food Truck POS (2026): 10 Systems Compared

The best food truck POS is one that keeps working when the signal drops, takes cards on a phone or small reader, and lets you change the menu between pitches. Several have free plans, which suit new trucks finding their feet. This page lists ten in no particular order, then explains what to check before your first service.

A food truck is a restaurant that moves, and that changes what you need from a till. You're working on a phone signal that comes and goes, a counter the width of a hatch, and a menu that might change between a Friday market and a Sunday wedding.

Here are ten food truck POS systems in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, from free mobile apps to full restaurant platforms. Each description comes from the provider's own website, re-checked today. If you also sell at markets or festivals, these ideas on making a temporary stall work hard are worth a look.

The FDA Food Code now names mobile food businesses

Here's a change US truck owners may have missed. The FDA's summary of changes in the 2026 FDA Food Code says it adds a new defined term, mobile food establishment, for a food establishment that can change location and moves as part of its routine operation. It also amends the definition of food establishment to add the word commissary, to make clear that commissaries count as food establishments too.

Two caveats. The Food Code is a model code, so it only applies where your state or local health department adopts it, and they adopt it at their own pace. But it shows the direction of travel: your truck and the commissary where you prep and store food are both treated as food businesses in their own right. So pick a POS that keeps sales records by location and by day and can export them, because it helps to show clearly where and when you traded.

Signal, battery and space: the truck test

  • Offline mode: the POS should keep taking orders when the signal drops and sync later.
  • Battery life: a phone or tablet running all day needs a charging plan.
  • A small footprint: a phone with Tap to Pay or a compact reader saves counter space.
  • Quick menu edits: change items and mark dishes as sold out in seconds between events.
  • Kitchen tickets: a printer or screen so orders reach the grill without shouting.

Setting up a POS on a food truck

  1. List where you trade most often and how good the signal is at each pitch.
  2. Choose between a phone-only setup and a tablet with a reader, based on how long your queues get.
  3. Build your menu with modifiers, such as extra cheese or no onions, before your first service.
  4. Run a practice shift in the yard with the signal switched off to test offline mode.
  5. Check that daily sales export cleanly for your bookkeeping.
  6. Keep a backup way to take cards in the van in case a device fails.

Food truck POS mistakes that spoil a service

  • Relying on venue wifi. It's often busy or missing, so plan for your own connection or offline mode.
  • Too many menu buttons. A short menu is faster to tap and faster to cook.
  • No charging plan. A flat tablet halfway through lunch stops everything.
  • Ignoring tips. If you accept them, make sure the POS records them clearly.

And if you're writing your menu boards and social posts yourself, these prompts for menus, socials and reviews can save you an evening.

My plain advice for food truck owners choosing a POS

If you're just starting out, begin with a free plan on a phone or a small reader and watch how your queue behaves. You can always move up once you know your busiest days and your typical order.

If you're already trading at big events, test offline mode before anything else and make sure orders reach the kitchen fast. A POS that's lovely in the office but stalls when the field's full of hungry people isn't the right one for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best POS for a new food truck?

A simple setup you can learn quickly, ideally on a phone or small tablet with a free plan or trial. Add kitchen screens and online ordering later, once you know you need them.

Does a food truck POS work without internet?

Some do. Several apps can keep taking orders offline and sync when you reconnect, so check this before you choose.

Can I take card payments on my phone at a food truck?

Yes. Some providers support Tap to Pay on a smartphone, and others sell small portable readers.

Do food trucks need a kitchen display?

Not always. A ticket printer works for many trucks, but a screen helps when orders stack up at busy events.

What does the 2026 FDA Food Code say about food trucks?

Its summary of changes says it adds a definition of mobile food establishment and makes clear that commissaries are food establishments. Local adoption varies, so check with your health department.

Should my food truck POS handle online orders?

It helps if you trade at regular spots where people can order ahead. For one-off events, a fast queue usually matters more.
