How to Subscribe to Someone on Instagram (and Why You Can't)

To subscribe to someone on Instagram, go to their profile and tap Subscribe, then confirm the monthly price through the App Store or Google Play. The button only appears if that creator offers subscriptions. Your account needs to be over 30 days old, and both of you must be in an eligible country.

Subscribing is how you get a creator's subscriber-only content on Instagram: exclusive stories and live videos, plus a subscriber badge next to your name in their comments and messages. It's a paid monthly arrangement with one creator, not a site-wide plan, and the creator sets the price.

Subscribe to a creator in four steps

  1. Open the creator's profile in the Instagram app.
  2. Tap Subscribe. If you don't see it, jump to the checklist below.
  3. Check the monthly price shown, or the free trial if the creator offers one.
  4. Confirm the purchase through the App Store or Google Play.

Instagram's fan terms say the price is chosen by the creator and shown at the time of purchase, and you're billed by the app store, which also handles renewals. So the subscription lives with Apple or Google, not inside Instagram's own payments.

What you'll get as a subscriber

  • Exclusive stories and live videos made for subscribers.
  • A subscriber badge next to your name, so the creator can spot you.
  • Your comments can be grouped together on the creator's side, which makes them easier for the creator to see and reply to.

One honest point from the terms: when you subscribe, the creator can receive information about how you engage with their subscription content. Meta also says it has no editorial control over what creators put behind the paywall, so judge the creator, not the feature.

Free trials and discounts to look for

OfferHow it works
Free trial14 days of subscriber content; cancel inside the 14 days and you're not charged
Next 5 promoRoughly 50% off for a creator's next 5 subscribers, kept for as long as you stay subscribed
Cancellation promoA free month offered once when you try to cancel

These are all chosen by the creator, so you'll only see them if they've switched them on. If you're planning to try a trial, put a reminder in your calendar before day 14, because the trial converts to a paid monthly subscription automatically.

Can't see the Subscribe button? Check these

ReasonWhat to do
The creator doesn't offer subscriptionsNothing on your side; not every creator has it
You're on the creator's waitlistInstagram will notify you in the app when it opens
Your account is under 30 days oldWait until it passes 30 days
You or the creator are in an ineligible countrySubscriptions can't be bought in Cuba, Iran, Ukraine, North Korea or Syria

The country rule is wider than most people expect. Instagram says subscriptions can be bought in almost every country, with only those five exceptions, so for most viewers the blocker is the creator or the account, not the country.

Subscribing vs following vs close friends

FollowClose friendsSubscribe

What you seePublic postsStories marked for close friendsSubscriber-only stories, lives and more

Following costs nothing and shows you what a creator posts publicly. It's the right starting point: follow for a few weeks, see how often they post and whether it helps you, then decide whether the subscriber extras are worth a monthly payment.

Close friends is a free list the creator controls; subscribing is a paid relationship you control. They're easy to confuse because both put a creator's stories in front of a smaller group. If you're on a creator's close friends list already, check what that gives you before paying for more, because some creators share plenty there.

Before you subscribe

  • Look at what the creator has said they'll post for subscribers, and how often.
  • Check whether a free trial is on offer first.
  • Remember cancelling stops the next charge but doesn't refund the current month.

For safety, only ever subscribe from the creator's real Instagram profile. Accounts that send you a payment link in a DM and promise subscriber content are not Instagram Subscriptions, and you get none of the app store protections. If you think you've already clicked a dodgy link, resetting your Instagram password is worth doing straight away.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you change your mind later, cancelling runs through the creator's profile or the Subscriptions tab in Settings, which passes you to Apple or Google. And if you're a creator reading this to see the fan's view, how to start getting paid on Instagram explains what you'll need to offer subscriptions yourself.

My verdict

Subscribing takes a minute once the creator offers it: tap Subscribe on their profile and pay through your app store. If the button's missing, it's usually the creator, your account age or your app store payment set-up rather than anything you've done wrong. Try the free trial when there is one, and set that reminder.
