To resend an email in classic Outlook, open it from Sent Items, then on the Message tab choose Actions and Resend This Message. In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, select the sent email, click the three dots, then Advanced actions and Resend message. Unlike forwarding, a resent email looks exactly like the original, with no FW or extra header.
A client swears they never got your proposal, or a colleague needs the same instructions you sent last week. Forwarding works, but it adds FW to the subject and stacks the old message underneath, which looks messy. Outlook has a cleaner option called Resend that sends the original again as if it were brand new. Here's where to find it, and why some people can't see it at all.
Resend vs forward
| Resend | Forward | |
|---|---|---|
| Subject line | Unchanged | Adds FW |
| Extra header text | None | Shows the original sender, date and recipients |
| Edit before sending | Yes, freely | Yes, plus room for a note |
| Best for | Re-delivering the same email cleanly | Passing an email on with a note |
Microsoft describes the difference this way: a resent email includes only the previously sent message with no added information, while a forwarded message also includes the original header details.
Resend an email in classic Outlook
- Open Sent Items in the folder pane.
- Double-click the email to open it in its own window.
- On the Message tab, in the Move group, select Actions, then Resend This Message.
- Remove anyone who doesn't need it again, add new recipients, and change attachments or wording if you need to.
- Select Send.
Resend an email in new Outlook or Outlook on the web
- Go to Sent Items and select the email.
- Select the three dots for more options.
- Choose Advanced actions, then Resend message.
- Adjust the recipients or content, then send.
Why can't I see Resend in new Outlook?
Here's the catch that confuses lots of people. Microsoft says the resend feature in new Outlook is only available when your primary account is a Microsoft 365 work account, and personal accounts won't see the option. If you're on a personal Outlook.com account in new Outlook and Resend is missing, that's why. Your best alternative is to forward the email and tidy it up, or copy the content into a fresh message.
One at a time only
Microsoft is clear that you can only resend one message at a time. There's no way to select a batch and resend them all, so if you need to resend several emails, repeat the steps for each. If that's a regular job, it may be a sign the emails belong in a shared folder or document instead.
Before you resend: check why it didn't arrive
- Look for a bounce. An undeliverable notice in your inbox usually explains the problem, such as a typo in the address.
- Ask them to check junk. The email may have arrived and been filtered.
- Check the attachment size. Large attachments can be rejected by the recipient's server.
- Confirm the address. Resending to the same wrong address won't help.
Fixing the cause first saves you sending the same email into the void twice.
Resend with changes
Resend isn't just for repeats. Because the message opens as an editable draft, it's handy for sending the same instructions to a new team member, updating a date in an old announcement, or sending a proposal to a second decision-maker. Just remove the original recipients if they don't need it again, so they don't get a confusing duplicate.
When to forward instead
If you want to add context, such as "see below, we discussed this on Tuesday", forwarding is better, because the original header shows who sent it and when. Resend is for when you want it to look like the first time. If you write the same emails often, a template saves you digging through Sent Items; my email sequence prompt pack helps you draft reusable versions, and this swipe file has wording for keeping clients who are wavering.
Avoid confusing the original recipients
If you resend to everyone who got the first email, some of them will have received it the first time and wonder why it's arrived again. A one-line note at the top helps: "Resending in case this didn't reach you." It takes five seconds and saves a handful of puzzled replies. If only one person missed it, remove everyone else before you send, so the others aren't bothered at all.

Resending from your phone
The Outlook mobile apps don't offer the same Resend command, so on a phone your quickest option is to forward the email from your Sent folder and delete the FW from the subject, or wait until you're at your computer. For anything important, such as a proposal or contract, I'd rather resend it from the desktop app so it arrives looking clean and professional.
My verdict
In classic Outlook, open the sent email and choose Actions, Resend This Message. In new Outlook, use the three dots, Advanced actions, Resend message, remembering it only appears on Microsoft 365 work accounts. Check why the first one failed before you resend, and forward instead when you want to add context.
