To be considered for the Snapchat monetization program you need at least 50,000 followers and 15,000 hours of view time in the last 28 days, with at least 3,000 of those hours from Spotlight. You also need to be 18 (or the age of majority where you live), live in an eligible country and post original content, and even then it's invite only.
Snapchat folded its old creator programmes into one monetization program, and the rules have already changed once since launch. That's why you'll find guides quoting completely different numbers. Here's what Snap's own help centre says now, and what changed.
The current requirements
| Requirement | Snap's rule |
|---|---|
| Followers | At least 50,000 |
| View time | 15,000 hours over the last 28 days |
| Spotlight share | At least 3,000 of those hours from Spotlight |
| Age | 18, or the age of legal majority in your country |
| Content | Original and advertiser-friendly, within the Community Guidelines and the Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility |
| Location | You live in an eligible country |
Notice the Spotlight condition. You can't hit the view time target from Stories alone: at least 3,000 hours have to come from Spotlight. Creators who only post to Stories are the ones who sit at the follower target and still never get invited.
What changed since launch
When Snap announced the unified program, its newsroom post listed a different set of tests: posting at least 25 times a month to Saved Stories or Spotlight, posting on at least 10 of the last 28 days, and hitting one of 10 million Snap views, 1 million Spotlight views or 12,000 hours of view time. The help centre now uses the single view time test above. If a guide is still quoting the 10 million views route, it's out of date.
There's a newer rule on top. Beginning May 7th, 2026, Snap says you need at least 100 hours of Total Spotlight View Time over the last 28 days to stay at the top level of its daily eligibility check. You'll find that number in a panel at the top of Insights, and it's the one to watch week to week.
It's invite only
This is the bit that trips people up. There's no application form. Snap reviews creators itself and emails the address on your account if you're invited, so keep your contact details current. Snap's Monetization Terms go further: meeting the minimum requirements doesn't guarantee an invitation, and Snap can remove anyone from the program at any time. The help centre also says no third party controls eligibility, so ignore anyone offering to get you in.
Why creators past 50,000 still don't get invited
I see the same pattern again and again. The follower count is there, but one of the quieter conditions isn't. These are the usual culprits, all taken from Snap's own list:
- Not enough Spotlight time. Total view time looks healthy, but fewer than 3,000 hours came from Spotlight.
- Content that isn't original. Snap asks for original, advertiser-friendly content. Reposts, compilations and clips from other apps work against you.
- Recommendation problems. Content has to sit inside the Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility, not just the general Community Guidelines. Borderline posts can be allowed on the app and still count against you here.
- Location. You have to live in an eligible country. If you don't, no amount of view time changes the answer.
- Age. Under 18, or under the age of legal majority where you live, and you're not eligible yet.
The 28 day window matters too. Both the 15,000 hours and the 3,000 Spotlight hours are measured over the last 28 days, so a single viral week followed by silence won't carry you. Steady posting beats one big spike.
How to give yourself the best chance
- Switch on your Public Profile so your Stories and Spotlight posts can reach people beyond your friends.
- Post to Spotlight regularly. It's the only route to the 3,000 Spotlight hours.
- Make Spotlight videos at least 30 seconds long, because Snap says shorter ones aren't eligible for monetization.
- Keep everything original and advertiser-friendly. Reposted clips and borderline content work against you.
- Check Insights weekly for your 28 day view time and your Spotlight view time.
- Keep the email on your account up to date so you don't miss the invitation.
Where to check where you stand
Everything Snap measures for this program lives in Insights. Look at three numbers: followers, total view time over the last 28 days, and Spotlight view time over the same window. If the last one is the weak spot, change what you post to Spotlight before you change anything else. And if you're close on every number, don't stop posting while you wait, because the window keeps rolling and Snap reviews creators on an ongoing basis rather than on a fixed date.

My verdict
The follower number gets all the attention, but view time is the real filter, and Spotlight is the lever. If you're past the follower target and still waiting, look at your Spotlight hours before anything else. Frequently asked questions
How many followers do you need for the Snapchat monetization program?
At least 50,000, according to Snap's help centre, plus 15,000 hours of view time over the last 28 days with at least 3,000 of them from Spotlight.
Can I apply for Snapchat monetization?
No. The program is invite only. Snap reviews creators and emails those it invites, and meeting the minimum requirements doesn't guarantee an invitation.
How old do you have to be for Snapchat monetization?
At least 18, or the age of legal majority in your country, according to the compliance requirements in Snap's help centre.
Do short Spotlight videos count?
Snap says Spotlight videos must be at least 30 seconds long to be eligible for monetization.
Do Stories count towards the view time target?
Yes, Stories count towards the 15,000 hours, but at least 3,000 of those hours must come from Spotlight over the same 28 days, so Stories alone can't get you there.
